Some of our area KJs have lost long term gigs because the owners of the place they played at wanted something new and fresh. My question is how do YOU stay fresh and exciting to your audience?
I know it helps to keep your library updated with the new releases, but is there anything beyond that?
Thanks

Staying fresh....
As you stated, keeping your library up to date with what your singers want to sing, (not necessarily with today's music on the radio, but old songs that you did not have before), also being a host you should not have fear of learning new somgs and encouraging your singers,(on the mic) to try new songs, lead by example. If you had met me 5 years ago when I started hosting, all I did was oldies & country. I have expanded my repitoire(sp?) into 80's rock and a few other challenging song for my vocal range, trying new songs every 2 weeks to stay fresh. Why keep singing the same old stuff every week.....talk about being stale.
About 3 years ago I found out nobody was doing music videos in my area, so when I am slow in the beginning I play a few music videos to keep the crowd entertained till I get singers. Ask yourself this, how may people watch VH1 or MTV anymore for the music videos? (Pffftttt....when do they ever play music videos anyways?... ) I have videos from the 70's to today's hits, it's a comversation starter amongst the crowd like: "I haven't seen that video in awhile" or "I have not seen this current video."
Two months ago I finally convinced my bar to do a specialty dress up night every other month alternating on Wed. & Sat. nights. The first specialty dress up night was Pimps & Ho's, it went over so good they want to do it every month alternating between Wed. one month, Sat. the next month, etc.....different themes each time.
You got to be creative and do different things to stay fresh.

I go to a place that makes people that are having a special occasion play silly games that are abosolutely hilarious....Everyone knows that that's the place to go when you have a special occasion. It's a lot of fun watching what the KJ get's the people to do. It's all in fun and everyone has a blast...It's always packed and I think that is the reason why.
And Shower to shower!!!

Isis, now that you mention it, I really enjoyed that karaoke show that you are speaking of. It scared me a little too. My sense of humor is a little weak to participate in the plunger thing they had you and Phatrat do.
That company knows how to put on a show. Not that others don't but it was SRO most of the time we were there that night.

Howdy Kelley, fellow Floridian...
The karaoke doesn't necessarily revlove around the theme, they sing whatever they want to sing. Doing theme nights gets the crowd more involved, especially my regular singers, they love to do fun and crazy stuff all the time.
What's really kewl you know when the non-singers come in dressed up, the last months theme was a pajama party, an older couple that only comes in during the day never at night, came in dressed up for the pajama party. The staff & the owner that knows them was very surprised that came in at night and dressed up for the theme. Participation from the non singers has been good, better than expected.
Also for theme nights, I have convinced the bar to give away one free well, wine or draft beer to anybody that comes in dressed for the theme, they get a ticket from me for the free drink, it doesn't cost the bar that much in drinks. We also get stuff from our alcohol distributors to give away,(shirts, necklaces, etc.), give away a little, get a lot more in return.
As being the host for the party, I have to dress up for each theme no matter what, once again leading by example.
I have always wanted to do theme nights for years but no owner / general manager was receptive to the idea, finally I work for someone that has an open mind on trying fun and different things to keep the crowd entertained. Isn't it what this business is all about anyways? Entertainment.

OK, it was just a guess.

I have actually been looking for a place that does a theme night. there is one fairly close that did an Elvis night about 4 months ago but that is the only theme night they do. i think it is an awesome concept...I would definatly dress up for that. I think it is just something that would add a lot of fun to the show....I could even see doing a costume contest on these nights...That would be a blast...Kinda like a mini version of Halloween at other times of the year...

Problem when it get's up to the upper 90's, with an extremely high dew point (such as here, today) we don't "stay fresh".. How those of you that live in the southern states function with such H&H is a mystery to me... This &)$^ it awful. I deliberately didn't go to bars during evenings of such oppressive days, because I'm quite affected by this stuff.. Tend to get into fights, even sober. I start swinging at unicorns

Only my opinion! But for the old couple in pj's, I think they meant that because they never come out in the evening that when they did it was because it was their bedtime. Or maybe I am just not getting the picture here. Then again I am blonde! Dah!

We're lucky to get people to come at all, let alone half naked. LMAO Still don't see what it has to do with karaoke. But it could have a lot to do with 20 years in jail.
