Misti, noone could ever say that auditioning for Idol would be a simple thing, however all those people you see in the final stages were where you are now. Vocal lessons definitely can be an asset for any singer, I would love to be able to afford them. I agree with Topher that it would be a good investment for anyone planning on making a career of singing.
The first time that I ever went to karaoke I got an offer for studio time from the KJ... he used to come up to my work and keep touch on the weeks I couldn't make it to karaoke because I was working. He was even looking for some original material to record with me. It never happened, he took ill and ended up in the hospital for 2 months due to complications from diabetes, then I moved away from that town.
Alisha Nauth (who just got cut from Canadian Idol) stood in my living room last summer and sang for my boyfriend and his brother after they had befriended her at Subway (where she was working at the time). The thing is that all of the contestants started where you are.
It takes determination and downright stubbornness to make a career out of singing and even if you don't make it onto Idol, if you have the drive and the voice you can get breaks elsewhere. If something happens and you don't even make it in the door at Idol, then you go other routes to be heard.. you make demos and send them away to record companies. There are many ways to get your voice out there, and SS is definitely a good place to start.
We all have our little stories I guess about our take on the music business and fame. I really don't care if I am never famous, I never have. I just love to sing and share it with people. I get told to try out for Idol all the time by strangers at karaoke.. I am too old though (yup, over the hill at 33 lol) and even if I wasn't I am not sure I would even bother. I think it's impressive that you do want to try and I hope that you will at least gain some positive experience from it.
In short, if you don't try you never know what might have been right? Don't let anyone's opinions shade yours... if you need help getting stuff recorded I can help you with getting set up for recording, just let me know. Recording yourself is one of the best ways to improve, it's helped me loads. Looking forward to hearing you post something on SS  :D

Sorry Lonman, I don't see how you got that from what I was saying. What career?

Maybe not career, I am only assuming you have a stable job???
All I was getting at is you obviously felt your studies & job were more important to you that trying to get into the music business.  You basically stated that when you said you couldn't get voice lessons in between work & school.  To me that states that the music side wasn't as important but you would like to improve your vocals if you can but your education & job at the time were more important to you as this will help you earn a stable income later.

Sorry, maybe I read too much into it.

Sorry about the colorful font before.... I do understand the audition process, and that getting trough is slim to none, because they are a TV show and they are looking for something specific, but we don't know what that is, I know you have to get through 3 rounds befor eyou see the judges, it is very hard, but I want to do this, first of all, to see if I am what they are looking for, and mostly for the experience. I think it is worth it, to say at least I tried.
My aunt's sister is a voice teacher ,she has heard me sing, and has been helping me and teaching me, she has been very critical. SO I'm basically getting lessons for free! I do have one song submitted, "At Last" BUT.... it was not my best, I JUST got a recording program and I am still earningthings about it, so I was just messing around with it, plus I couldn't really sing too loud, I had people sleeping in a nother room, I will be subbing more songs soon when I can really sing to my full potential.
I understand what you all are saying though.

It would help if I was better at communicating my thoughts. I must have used up my helpful words yesterday. :D

Misti, the voice lessons are the best way to get ready in time if at all possible. If the vocal coach requires an audition, don't be surprised. The better coaches do.

Okay well that puts another spin on things... (the having to sing quietly) cause I thought you did really well even before I knew that. I am looking forward to your next sub girl...welcome to SS :D

Hey, I just heard Misti's first sub, "At Last".  Let's just say Misti doesn't really need a lot of voice lessons.  LOL

I was the one to suggest that you sub your song, and now that you did, I can't listen to the song. The player pop up and then it just get disconnected. My bad luck.

ATM : I think I have the same problem as you at SS

It's somewhere in my own user setup. When I switch user names I can get right in. If I switch everything back to the defaults it will probably come right up on my computer.

I've been taking singing lessons for a while now so I can offer a little advice on breathing for what it's worth (heaven knows I have a lot to learn) but a few things I've learned:

* Breath in deeply, feeling your stomach almost expand. Don't hold your stomach in.
* Breathing is not the most difficut thing about singing...just breath naturally, comfortably.
* Study the song you are performing, figure out if there are long passages that might pose a problem with sustaining the airflow and figure out a place to take a breath that fits what you are singing.
* Singing  in the upper range takes the most breath out of people because we learn from an early age that we have to really force the air and constrict our vocal chords to "scream".  With practice (and this is something I'm still trying to master) it should take only slightly more air pressure than it takes in your "comfort zone range".  Forcing too much air on those high notes and warp the tone sometimes.
* Keep your head level--don't bring your head down or too far up.
* Do some light aerobic activity before performing--this works wonders!
* Sit in front of an air conditioner all night, rub Vicks all over your chest, and smoke 2 cartons of Newport Menthol 100s----------sorry, I couldn't help myself there.

Good luck to you and if you get an audition, sing to Paula (don't even look at those other two jokers)

Michael

I have a question: do you have plans to pursue a musical career besides American Idol? Just food for thought.

I just got this really strange visual image of a lineup of MJK "mini-me" characters wearing yarmulkes and dancing very badly.

You should call the group Matzoballs.

:drums: >>rimshot as Gigi is dragged offstage with a big hook.

Oy vey! I've always dreamed of forming my own combo, singing jazzed up versions of the various Jewish fraelichs, something like "Manny Shevitz and the Gefilte Fish", something in that line.

Hi Misti, I just listened to your rrendition of At Last. That song is a very good choice for you. It sounds like any song you pick might be a very good choice though. Some poeple have offered some very good advice and others have offered you help as well. I think you will have everything you need from this website aside from the stuff you just can't find unless you do the legwork and homework yourself.

There are people here who are in bands currently and some who also do sound and other tech stuff for bands. They might be able to help in ways that you had not anticipated, such as what to wear or not, etc.

Please do a sub that you can really cut loose on, ie. no volume concerns, I would really love to hear it. I will offer a more detailed critique if you do as I'm sure a few others here might also. I'm not saying that I would know more than your vocal coach, maybe I would hear something she hasn't mentioned to you yet.

I am very jealous that you have the opportunity and the talent to do AI. I'm sure that I will get over it... someday. lol

Please keep us posted and do another sub very soon please.

Chuck

I was able to read her post with the use of some 3D glasses I had that came with a Rhino VHS version of "Cat Women on the Moon". Close one eye and it was blue, close the other eye and it was red.  Very stimulating experience.....
