Wouldn't be a bit surprised about it.

$80 a barrel or more coming to a station near you.

This might end up to be WW3 yet ?  Huh.   :(

What age would they draft up to in the event of a world war ?   Was WW2 40-50 ?

I know WW2 was up into the early 30s pretty early in the game; beyond that I do not know.

I am such a neo-hippie that I hate the direction things are taking. I truly do not understand the concept of preferring to fight over getting along.

According to all of the Web sites I found, the three WWII conscriptions in the US went like this:

Draft #1: Ages 21-31 eligable for draft
Draft #2: Only men who had turned 21 since the last draft were eligable
Draft #3:  Ages 18-21 eligable for draft

During the 3rd draft, ages 31-41 were added to the selective service group that had to register, but that group was never subject to draft before the war ended.

During each of the four Vietnam war drafts, men ages 18-26 were eligable for the draft lotteries.

Today, men ages 18-25 are required to register with selective service in the event that conscription should be required.

Phatrat has a cool plan for people with my "disposition" in the event of a war. I would have to call us the new berzerkers. :D

I agree with the sentiment expressed by my baby. I suppose that since I was raised by hippies, one of whom joined the service in order to avoid the draft during Vietnam, I was a second gen hippie. I suppose this still makes me a neo-hippie. I don't see how this counts but I actually have small hips for my build.

Thank's Chris,  I recall it being AT LEAST 40 for the medics, engineers, and non-combat positions.. (or something like that)..

I think the "oil" is the main thing that makes all the other nations a little skittish about the middle east.

I'm also not sure that we aren't  already IN "WWIII."  And that is a world war with terriost.  The best thing that can happen is China, Japan, and Russia continue to become more and more involved in the world market.  They each already have numerous companies that are being traded on the stock market.  They realize how this bennifts not only the companies in their country but their countries themselves.

And we all know how most matters in this world (whether we like it or not) come down to money.  These countries are just now expereicning a boom to their finances.  They are very comparable to where the USA was back in the early 20's and 30's.  With this intering into the equation, I don't think the "big boys" want to mess this up.  A major world war would be too upsetting to their economies.  They could possibly win the war but still lose in the end.

If drafting were to becomae a reality here, again, I would do exactly what my mom did. I would get pregnant and name the boy Chuck.

Yep, and the days of conventional war are over as well.  With the terrorist inclusion, no one is safe, at least in the other wars, civilians were generally not primary targets.  The enemy didn't cower in the civilian population either.

History is an extremely weak area for me.  Never really was that interested in it. What constitutes a world war ?  Global superpower's ALL are involved, but to what degree ?  and the world economy is affected I assume.  I honestly don't know the definition of a "World War". Is it the involvement of all the superpowers in terms of "fighting" power ?  or is it just the world economy that suffer's, and this can preclude ALL super-powers taking part in actual battle.  OR, is the whole world involved in lieu of the fact the technologically ALL super-powers have taken part in this, such as fiber-optics, electronics technology ?  ETc ?

In some way, shape, or form.. This is a world situation on terrorism.  Depending on which side of the fence a person is on,  Many consider us to be terrorists.  Whether we like it or not, that's factual.  George Bush is not looked upon as anything less than pure evil by many.  A bully.  So I suppose, this is about "Terrorism" regardless of which side of the fence a person is on.

World War I was obviously not called WWI at the time, and was not ever called that until WWII was well underway almost 30 years later. WWI was known as "The Great War" while it was being fought due to its scope. WWII was called WWII from the beginning due to its obvious parallells with The Great War (germany, etc.).

I guess The Great War II just doesn't roll off the toungue or have the marketability that WWI and WWII carry. The Italian Stallion will tell ya that you gotta keep it simple!!

So, I'm not sure that a World War really has criteria beyond it being a war similar to the other two, i.e., allied world powers fighting other allied world powers, which I certainly wouldn't classify our conflict against terrorism as.

We'll have to coin a new moniker. Send a few suggestions to your local paper and you could go down in history as the one who coined the name!!

How about the third war of the second Bush.

Maybe the fourth war of the Bush dynasty.

How about Bush Wackers in 3D starring Edward James Olmos and Janet Jackson. :dancin:

Let's just call it the "War of man's agression agains't man."  Not sure of the year but it started with Cain and Able.  It's all really the same war.  just different battles.

Kelly

Could call it the "War of man's evil nature."  But that acronym spells out "WOMEN."  I think that's part of another thread. :D

These are tribal wars and the desert nomadic tribes have been killing each other for centuries. When the wealthy take control of goverments and force the majority into a survival mode (tax and spend), they then try to force their morals & sometimes religions on the masses. What is going on in Africa right now ia an abomination of mankind.. Religion is not mainly the cause of conflicts but is used as a rallying call to action and divisions amongts the tribes. A few radicals feel the compulsive need to eradicate all other tribes. And as the population of the world grows into several billions their numbers increase also...Also the number of downtrodden turns into many and are more difficult to control.

The conflict in Ireland was not catholic against protestant it was a battle between a poor economic society against the wealth that was in control of the poltical and judicial process. It is simple as that. This country is headed in that direction but the constitutionj and its strong foundation (although it and the bill of rights have been eroded) is saving our (@$%&#!) right now. It is obvious with the polarization between the two parties they do not represent their constituents any more They prostitute out to big momey interests They have been so busy with smoke screens and inventing problems to gain more control, they are not now able to deal with real problems that are slapping them alongside the head and should have been solved twenty years ago.

This world is at a critical time right now and we deperately need some leadership that is not living in a fantasy realm and knows what is going on. Instead of worrying about cigarrettes in bars and other trivial bs they should be figuring out how they are going to pay for their pet projects and how they are going to enforce all the laws. The statutes in co makes up  14 volumes and stand somewhere between 6 to 8 feet high. Nobody has read all of them.. Yet they continue to add to them... The constitution of this nation is the most important declaration today and needs to be protected at all costs. I guess the the billof rights is totally forgotten They sure as hell aint taught in schools anymore..

Hezbalahalhahlahlah just declared open war with Israel.     I don't understand this.   We and everyone else in the world knows that Syria and Iran are funding HezballahalaFalalalala.la.la.la.la and other terrorist groups.   How come they still exist?????

I've seen too many wars.  I was born shortly after WWII.  My dad's hired man on our farm was killed in the Korean War.  I served in the Navy during the Viet Nam era.

I enlisted because I was about to be drafted.  I love my country and going to Canada was simply not an option I wanted to exercise.  So I enlisted in the Navy because I felt that I had a better chance of not getting my butt shot full of holes than if I was carrying a rifel in a rice paddy.

As it turned out my service was brief, undistinquished and entirely without incident.  I didn't know it was going to be that way going in, though.

I am not opposed to war.  I think war is a necessary evil in certain circumstances.  Nonetheless I dislike war because we send our best and brightest to be killed and maimed while the old guys like me who started the war sit back in safety.  Back in the 60s it occurred to me and a number of my contemporaries that it might have been a different war if JFK, Lyndon Johsnson or any of the members of Congress had been compelled to go and fight.  Same with the leaders of the other side.

I think war should only have one purpose; to annihalate the other side.  When they are ready to give up, the war is over.  The victor does not negotiate, the victor dictates the terms of the peace.  And the guys who started the war have to pay for it.

Starting with Viet Nam war hasn't been the same.  In previous wars the combatants pretty much knew who the enemy was.

Now we often don't know who the enemy is and they won't play war by our rules.  It's become pretty obvious that the US bit off more than it could chew in Iraq.

I don't really object to being there.  The world allowed Saddam to get by with his crap for too long as it was.    My sense is, and I don't know for sure and I don't know that we will ever know for sure, that we got into the right war for the wrong reason.  It is easy for me to believe that Bush either got bad info or that his people badly misinterpreted it.  I think what's plain is that he was looking for an excuse.

It was plain wrong for the Defense Department to believe, or lead us to believe, that this war could be fought without American kids dying (kids from other countries too).  War doesn't work that way.  They couldn't beat us on our terms so they changed tactics and killed far more of our troops than they did using more conventional means.  That's what makes this war a little like Viet Nam.

And like Viet Nam we're paying a lot more attention to how the news media reacts too things than we are to winning the war.  And when they put themselves in harms way and get themselves killed, injured or kidnapped what happens.  That becomes the story.

Somebody with a military mind needs to sit down, figure out how to deal effectively with the terrorists tactics and then construct an effective counter measure.  Frankly, I don't care what it is.  This is war.  With guns and bombs.  It's not a night out at a Tiny Tim concert.  I am constantly amazed that the press insists that the US fight by the rules at a time when there aren't any rules left.  We didn't elect the press.  We didn't put them in charge.  Let 'em report what's going on and leave the analysis up to those of us who are footing the bill.

For a long time after I got out of the Navy I wore my peace symbol.  About 3 years ago I began wearing it again every day.  I believe in peace.  I believe that people of good will should be able to work things out.  I also believe there are plenty of people who don't much care about good will and are pursuing their own agenda which likely includes the destruction of the US.  The world needs to get rid of them and the sooner the better.

For those of you worried about Israel how about cutting them some slack?  During their relatively short history the have never once shared a border with an ally.  Their borders are all with countries that wish to see them cease to exist.  They've had to deal with terroism throughout their history.  It's made them wary and combative when they see danger.  After more than 50 years of that kind of crap I don't blame them.  No they have not always been entirely right.  Yes they have used excessive means sometimes.   But the press and the politicians don't see that as a reaction to the way things have been.  When you are constantly on the defensive it's good to be an aggressor time and again.

Thanks for letting me rant about this.  I really truly hate war.  I hate what it does to people and I hate the divisiveness and the futility of it.  Most of all I hate that it is sometimes necessary.

Larry

The only favorable memory I have of Lebonan is when we partied and got drunk with a bunch of Russian sailors in Beruit. Even then you are watching each others back....

During peace time they are busy sneaking around killing innocent women and children... When they are getting their (@$%&#!) kicked they want to talk peace....Their draft is a website speech When they are in dire straights they declare war That is a desperate call for help... Arabia & Jordan as much said you are on your own. Look at a map Syria is between Turkey and Iraq...They have no major ports on the Med..  (Beruit is and always was a trade center and gate between the mideast and europe.) It is blocked.....Iran is between Iraq and Afganistan... Their world support such as it was dwindles with each terroist attack...

Hez ba who?///////

Edit :   An dont think the seventh fleet in the med and our presence in Iraq is not crucial at this time It is very crucial and the politicains better get their priorites straight right now and quit hampering  military objectives with their personal political bs....

Good point.

Anything to do with war scares the hell out of me. The way I deal with it is to quit being so serious. I'm trying to work on a medium between that and the way I used to get when stressed-out from things this bad.

I doubt that the Navy is going to want me back no matter what happens. My RE code was 1 when I came home. Since then, they didn't even want me back in the reserve. I called my old command when I saw the news of 9/11. They said thanks for calling but we don't need you and we really don't need to know where you are.
