I have special sub-books that I create in KJpro to add to a tab when we have 'theme parties' at the bar and I take them out afterwards. Like this past week was our annual Beach Blast Blow-out, and I added a section with all surfer/beach/summer songs (simple FIND for the theme's keywords and copy them to the new theme book I create). It doesn't take much time, and they get a kick out of it.

Daily genre tabs? NAH...too many cross-over artists and mixed-genre co-artists these days. How would you know where to put the song by Nelly & Tim McGraw? And if you have to think about where to catalogue it, how is the drunken comeover guy from middle management going to know where to look for it?

The Nelly/Tim McGraw song is undoubtably Rap/R&B. Have you ever heard the song? Rap and singing over a bass beat. No elements of country whatsoever. There is very little chance that someone who wanted to sing that song would go directly to the country book, they'd go straight for the Rap/R&B book and look up Nelly. Either way, the song is awful, I wouldn't be too upset to leave it out of all of the books.

Just on a side note, I read somewhere that Tim McGraw recorded his part of that song in a Nashville Studio and Nelly recorded his part in an LA studio. The two had never met and met for the first time well after the song was released on the radio. Gotta love technology!!

I used that song simply as an example of the mixed genre artists who are recording things together...if the artist book was also done by genre, it would be a nightmare.

Yep...it's awful...fer sher!

As for the point you directly attacked me on, modern R&B is CERTAINLY the direct decendent of older R&B, including motown. Don't be ignorant. If you just want to argue this point based on some warm and fuzzy memories of motown that you just don't get from modern R&B, then fine, but to say they are not in the same family tree is stupid.

Sorry.  What I said was not meant as an attack on you or anybody else.  I won't argue the fact that what is now categorzied as R&B is a descendant of what I know as R&B.  The point I had hoped to make is that they are not the same and putting a common label on both confuses me.

Yes I probably am ignorant.  I don't have a problem with that in that the definition of ignorant is "Showing or arising from a lack of education or knowledge."  Call it a gap in my learning or just chalk it up to being a crochety old fart.  I don't have a problem with that.

It's just a personal preference with me.  If I'm going to hang a label on something, regardless of whether you want to call it genre or style, I would like it to be meaningful to me.  I have always disliked the practice of co-opting words or phrases and then assigning different meanings to them based on some whim.  So to me R&B has a particular meaning.  Does it matter much whether it's because I get a warm and fuzzy feeling from it? I think not?

But please don't be offended.  I have the same feelings about "gay", "native american" and a lot of other words or phrases.  I am a native american.  I was born here, what other country would I call my native land?  Some of my ancestors were born in Sweden.  Others were born in Ireland.  They all emigrated to the US before I was born.  They were not native americans.  I am.  And sometimes I feel gay in the sense that I am cheerful and lighthearted.  But I that has nothing to do with my sexual orientation (straight, thank-you).

Anyway, I didn't mean for anyone to see what I wrote as a serious indictment of the various methods of assgining labels to different kinds of music (I've given up using the word genre-it feels effete to me and I'm not comfortable with it).  That was why I put smiles  LOL  after some of the things I said.

I am always interested in the ways that words are used and I am endlessly fascinated by how words used to communicate a thought often convey a different message than the write intended.

I recognize that my sarcasm is not always funny to everyone.  If I've offended you or if you felt that I called your knowledge in this area into question I am truly sorry.  I readily admit that your knowledge is superior to mine.  And I don't mind learning from you.  I found what you had to say to be very instructive.

I believe though, that I'm going to reserve my right to my opinion, wrong though it may be.

I wasn't offended at all - and you've brought up many more valid points, all of which you are well-entitled to have an opinion on. *smile* Music is merging, changing, morphing, crossing over lines... So, what is rap? Is it R&B? And how would a person blessed with more years interpret it when they are looking for a song in a book compared to a kid who just turned 21 and watches MTV 24/7? and how would you like to spend your night in the booth listening to their opinions of which genre of the book that song SHOULD be in instead of where you put it?

It's a whole can of worms that I'M not prepared to open at the bar...

Modern country music sounds like what was called in the 70's, middle of the road music.(MOR)    Hence I think this is the reason for country musics explosion of popularity.    Old counrty music was the twangy guitar, crying in my beer stuff.    I say oldies are generally considered 50s-mid 60s music.   Then came ACID rock/ hard rock mid 60s- mid 70's, mid to late 70s- mid eighties was disco.    R & B is R& B.   RAP is still called rap, might be classified as Urban music.   You still have BUBBLE GUM, PUNK, GRUNGE, GANGSTA RAP and other smaller breakdowns.   You would be lucky just to have the year of the song.   Way too many slots to fit everything into as far as clasification/type.
