Personal preference for me is to have both at the bar. I agree with Lonman if you have too much in the book people ruin them so 2 separate books makes sense.

Of course your right! It was more of  that someone would actually submit that song at your show and want to sing it. I think this might be the making of another topic for discussion. "Songs you hate that get requested"

well, it was ME that sang it, and it was a theme night (80's) and we were pulling out obscure stuff on top of the more popular ones.
I used to sing that song a lot in my first few years of singing karaoke.
I admit from strictly of a fan of songs, that particular song is really lame... but it didn't change how popular it was in the 80s... hey, LOTS of lame songs were popular then... as we were branching off from the hated days of Disco and the British Invasion, American pop culture got stupid for a few years!
I will be the first to admit that songs falls into that category! !
I remember a great comment on Queensryche's "Operation: Mindcrime" which was a rock opera... like Styx's "Kilroy Was Here" and the Who's "Tommy", in that there wasn't a lot of great type rock-opera concepts out there, and "Operation: Mindcrime" just blew away all that had been tried before!
As for your suggestion of "Songs you hate that get requested", every few months, someone brings that up, and a pretty lively conversation gets going.
Seen that happen several times over the three or so years I've been here, and it went on for a long time before THAT!

OMG, I would die for a full length version of Mind Crime on Karaoke.....WOW, that would be the ultimate. Why can't we get cool stuff like that on disc? Well I guess I can answer my own question. Who could sing it and besides the people who actually know what it is, who would care....ME,ME,ME
Another very cool concept album which never made a dent in the US is Tony Carey's Planet P Project 'Pink World' album. Admittedly it had some very close ties to sounding like a Pink Floyd album, but had some really great tunes, many of which were acoustic and would be excellent for Karaoke. But then I'm dreaming outloud again.

But the majority of the concept CD IS available thru SC... and if you go to their site and request stuff to be made, it won't just be the same 20-30 people that are excited about it... and there's a good chance that some more QR material will be put out there.
I SERIOUSLY doubt that "Suite Sister Mary" ever would be, unless it was by an independant label... or unless they just hacked the heck out of it!
I remember that Planet P Project... but haven't heard it in ages!

Yeah there's a ton of stuff I would love to see on Karaoke.
Classic Rock:
Uriah Heep, something besides Stealin and Sweet Lorraine
Mountain, besides Mississippi Queen
Bloodrock, yeah like that's ever gonna happen
Gino Vanelli, guy has one of the most underrated voices there is
Black Sabbath, something besides Dio and Ozzy. More along the lines of Ray Gillen, Ian Gillan, Tony Martin.
Blue Oyster Cult, anything but Don't fear the Reaper and Godzilla. More of the stuff from the first three albums, like Cities on Flame, Last Days of May.
Songs that I would love to see on Karaoke:
River Deep Mountain High-either a Deep Purple or Tina Turner. My personal preference would be the version by Chris Farlowe(who???) who sang with such groups as Coliseum, Atomic Rooster.
Rope Ladder to the Moon-again by Chris Farlowe, but I'd settle for the original Jack Bruce version.
Now don't get me wrong, everyday I find a hidden gem in my search for stuff that I like to sing.
Like Vanilla Fudge, You keep me Hanging on.
Cream, White Room.
I guess my biggest frustration is how generic Karaoke can be at times. I know that it's done for the masses and the masses want something simple.
I'm still looking for the substitute(live band) where I can fully express my voice. As a vocalist, I'm still looking for challenges, but that's just a personal thing, ego stroking on my part.
I've never tried any vocal removing software, but each day I think more and more about it.
James

Treat yourself when you can find the off-the-wall stuff. If the audience hears you sing something that is from-the-heart first, and from-the-book second, maybe they will do the same. Could be a fascinating way to build a karaoke library.

Funny you should mention that. The other night I did Bowie's Space Oddity and Changes back to back. My mom(first time she's come to see me do Karaoke) made mention of how folks were singing along with it. I mean I didn't even realize that many folks would even know the songs period, much less the words. Even had one guy come up and shake my hand later on and thanked me for doing 'Changes'.
So yeah I guess you're right, you can change things sometimes, one song at a time.
It also helps if you know the song well enough that you can sing to the audience rather than having to stare at the screen. Which I'm working on, but that little monitor is such a crutch sometimes.

I made up some full page color covers. I have them laminated so they don't get wet and ruined, every week. Too expensive to keep redoing.

THANKS MATT....
So much for trying to save any money from this weeks gigs. Look like it's going to be another night of searching Karaoke sites for the best prices.
Seriously, thank you very much for taking the time to look all that stuff up for me.
Tonight was such a crazy night, I ended up doing almost all of the David Bowie disc.
The crowd for some reason was really into it, and I had one person in particular that kept calling me out to do some more. So I ask if anyone minded and they're all like 'Go for it'. So I put the disc in and just hit play and sang everyone of them that I hadn't already done.
Folks were really nice about complimenting the fact that I didn't do the same ole same ole at my shows. They said they felt they were at a concert more than a Karaoke show.
So yeah, I really want to keep adding all of this off the wall stuff. I think folks like it because they can tell that I really get into it, and that makes all the difference in your performance.
Thanks again,
James

HOLY COW, the very first Tina Turner link I hit, was Zoom Golden years, and what do I find but a Chris Farlowe song also 'Out of Time'. That one's a must have for my list.
And boy howdy, hit the motherlode on the Sabbath with the Radio Stars, some very cool tunes.
Happy Happy Joy Joy

Like most of you, I prefer Artist listings. Easier to find the songs that you are going to sing by that particular artist. And as someone else said earlier in this forum, a lot of people will sing the same artist's song. For myself, I have both listings, and leave a book with just title's right on my table. When they bring their slip up, if they couldn't find a particular song because they could not remember the artist, but did remember the title, they could look it up then. Also save themselves a trip coming back up to bring the slip.
Every songbook has 1 listing of each song, the best version. My book contains all versions in case I need to throw in another disc because it skipped or something.
That doesn't happen often as each disc is cleaned before putting it in the machine.
Working on the computer setup though, so should never have to clean a disc again.
