y'know that little strip of road that runs next to a freeway?  down here we call it a frontage road, but i've heard it called an access road and a service road.  what's it called where you're from?

Depending on where you live that little road could have actually been the main road or highway that everyone use to have to travel before the new highway was built.

We called them the freeway. the main highway you have to pay toll, the little one that run along side  is free of toll.

Ok.. again, I'm sorry... but.. the wha?! What the heck are ya'll talking about?

there is a road that runs along yer main high way? Lol, we are lucky to have a high way AT ALL. Heck, back home, the main highway that runs from halifax to the valley, is only recently getting TWINNED (you know.. so, one highway IN, and one BACK... so, all cars are going in the same direction.....)... so.. no.. no little road, that does anything...

There are little bits int he middle of the twinned parts, that are "Service roads", i suppose.. but, are only for plows to turn around, and emergency vehicles... and, they appear to be good places for the RCMP to hide, to catch ya speeding...

Heck, here, i live right on the trans Can.... and the majority of it is like, driving through little towns, like a normal road...

ok, i am babbling about HIGHWAYS.

I have been told those are actually called Texas U-Turns. Go figure.

Ever been to New Jersey? First time I saw a sign that said "Left turn, right lane only" I started missing those Texas U-Turns really badly. And they have traffic circles. On two-lane roads. In the middle of nowhere. What...do they think the tress are going to run a red light or something? Yankees, I swear...don't have the sense to serve Dr. Pepper at the McDonald's up there either.

Here in Wisconsin they are generally called "frontage roads".

I'm originally from Nebraska and like Gilly's Canada you're lucky if you have a road of any kind.  A road that runs alongside another road is considered to be an expensive luxury.

When they first built I-80 through Nebraska years ago they ran it right through the middle of some farmer's fields.  Then they compounded the problem by only putting exits every 10 miles or so.  The farms tend to run big out there because it takes a lot of land to produce a crop that will generate any income.  So a lot of farmers found themselves in the unenviable position of not being able to get to some of their fields.  The irony, of course, is that I-80 was being built with tax dollars, some of which were generated from the same people who were having their farming businesses disrupted.  Only in America!

I call it the hurdle between me and the highway. The hurry-up and wait road. The thorn in my side road.

"The Frontage road", starring Lou Diamond Phillips and Edward James Olmos.

Oh, don't mention Courtney Thorne Smith. She still blanks my blank. When I saw her in that made for TV movie with John the-rockett(sp?, I don't speak any french, not even Cajun), I was hooked.

Up here (Iowa) it is called a frontage road if it serves business along say a majior road running through a town.  If it is running out in the middle of nowhere, it is usualy called a service road, and usualy goes to the next entrance/exit ramp.  Or someties, like others siad, it is just the old road that the new one has replaced.
