That is so true. What are the teachers teaching these days. I hope they cover karaoke. If they do I might consider taking voice again.

Yep,  the ego's & getting hit on by the bass player while the drummer is chasing your pet basset hound around the backyard. Trying to get the guitarist to pay you back for his chronic deviated septum condition,  (coke habit)... Nothing like music to bring one big dysfunctional family together *at least as long as you have a license, and can shuttle the others to, and from  *they can't drive,  DUI stuff*...  You end up with amps, and a trap drumset in your living room,  and a new roomate or two who snore....(drummer call's and say's he's getting ride over to pickup his snare for a gig... of course when he arrives, he forget's to get his snare, and you end up feeding him, and putting him up for a month... since his wife threw him out've the house),  Keep in mind that when you put him up on the floor on an air mattress next to your dog,  he's quite happy,  but your dog runs away....

I didn't understand the concept before, now I get it.   I thought you were talking about an "open stage" night.   Where a bunch of musicians get together and hack around and you could get up and sing.    The live band karaoke does sound pretty good.   First of all you would need to find musicians that were willing to play for a bunch of so so singers.   How do they get paid.   Sounds like a lot more money to pay the band.     That's part of the reason bands aren't working as much as they would like.

This sounds like a lead singer wannabe fantasy night.   Could work if you had the right musicians.

It works great here in Portland with Karaoke From Hell---theyve been at it for almost 10 years now, have a 400 song song book and play Thursdays at one of the OLD LINE BLUES Bars and on Monday nights at at semi-titty bar. Either place is a graet place to go and sing in front of a live band and try out the real thing.

Who are some of the people playing in this band?  Is there a song list online anywhere?  Is the band adept at changing keys depending on the singer or is it one key fits all?

It supprise me that of the 400 songs listed in the book I can sing 12 of them. Which mean I can go over there 4 times and not sing the same song. ( assume I got only 3 go to sing).

Odie--the people in the band are all musicians in pdx--they play in other bands too. I dotn believe they are able to play in other keys. They play alot off the music sheets. So you sing as its actually written--jsut like a live band doents play songs in off keys. theres a song list on thier website

These are not your average band type players.   Most have really big egos and would not like this type of a gig.   You would be hard pressed to find too many groups willing to do this.     Now you have to deal with 4-5-6 different people to coordinate a gig, vs 1 KJ.    I'm not saying it doesn't sound like a lot of fun, I'm just thinking about the complexity of the task.   I'm going to talk to some musicians I know, to get their input.          That's a lot of songs to learn.     I know 600, but I don't have to remember all the chords.    LMAO

I agree with the "Big Ego" comment. Ive met PLENTY of those. Many were very nice people tho. But liek anywhere else there are some REAL  ARROGANT KNUCKLEHEADS out there too.

I agree with Big Dog.  I probably "know" 500-600 songs as well but recalling them all at a moments notice is something else again.  It's not too bad for 3 chord rock 'n roll but anything more complex can get a little hairy.  Now that's just a considertion for one of the several musicians.  When you put them all together you have to remember intros, stops, and other stuff and do them together all at the same time you can be tearing your hair out.  Especially if no two members of the band recall the arrangement in the same way.  Then when you add a singer who has never met you before, let alone rehearse with you, it adds another layer of difficulty.

This sounds like the kind of gig where you would end up tearing out what little hair you might have left.

My duo has in the neighborhood of 150 songs in our list.  On a good night we only get to about 60 of them so our rehearsals are divided into working on stuff that we know but haven't played for awhile, and new stuff we're planning on adding.  So our list is ever expanding because we're always coming up with new stuff.  I imagine that at some time we'll reach "full saturation".  I don't know what we'll do then.

This really sounds quite boring, and annoying for a group of already established musicians.  To be perfectly honest.  When I was with a band, and someone wanted to sit in, assuming their tempo, and pitch was way off it was tough not to cringe.... I wouldn't be able to do this... It just seems like a drag....

Yeah Kap, I agree.  In fact our typical way of handling things is to say that we just don't do that kind of thing unless we can rehearse with the person first.  Of course that's never possible so it never gets done.

I guess if we were putting ourselves out there as a live karaoke band that would be different.  But it would scare the bejebbers out of me.

If you put yourself out as a "live karaoke" band,  what that means of course, is depending on venue, people are going to ask you if you can play what you might find today to be JUNK...  If it's a middle-aged crowd, that wants standards, and classic, or contemporary styles, that's fine.... Although I *can* read, (had to for session and studio playing, jazz ensembles etc), there's some stuff I don't want to read....I'd rather starve than play some of the stuff I hear young'un's singing at local karaoke places....

JMO....unless you CAN stick to a decent ballad, standard, show type setting... That might be fun, but I'd think you'd have many requests to transpose... You'd have to be able to transpose..

It doesn't make sense to me, how a musician hired for the sole purpose of entertaining a multitude of singers wouldn't have the ability to transpose.  That's go over as well as a KJ who didn't have a pitch shift
