Out've respect for chucks topic,  I'll post in here what we were discussing,  We hear terms such as "Manly" or "Real man"... Yet I'd really like to know what constitutes "Manly", and what a real man "isn't"..  My guess is that the term "real man" is such an elusive term, that it's impossible for anyone to state within the realm of human reason what "Real man" is.... Being in complete control of one's emotions ?    That's superhuman... not a "real man"...   Can a real man cry today ?  40 years ago, when "real men" didn't cry, real men drank themselves to death, and died an early death from psychosomatic ailments found when basic needs and emotions are repressed...  Just wondering... I'd really like to know what the difference is between Joe average man,  and "Real manly man".. is it more than an exterior act ?   What does a real man do differently than let's say *me* when he's in the privacy of his own bedroom ?

(If someone's going to say, "Spend it with a real woman"..... BZZZZT.... wrong answer !)   LOL

This is quite a cyclical thing too..... What women find attractive to TODAY in a male, is not what was attractive 30 years ago... So A "real man" has to keep evolving too ?

Okay, my personal opinion of "real man" is different even from a lot of my gf's opinions. I think being masculine doesn't make someone a "real" man. Machismo annoys the heck out of me. To me, a real man has a good heart. He treats both men and women with respect, he can admit when he's wrong and he always puts his family first. He never shirks off his responsibilities in the pursuit of pleasure, and he never acts like having *one* gives him the right to be *one*. Someone having big muscles, or lots of chest hair, or never showing emotions doesn't make them a man. In fact, a man who is capable of showing his emotions earns a lot more points in my book. I am fortunate enough to have found someone who fits the profile I just described, despite coming from a background where he got told having emotions was a bad things cause he was a boy. Machismo does not make you a real man.

My mother was a staunch feminist of the 70s. She told me that a "human being" needs to be in touch with their feelings and sensitive to those around them. Sensitive and caring, that was also the kind of person my dad is.

I learned to cook when I was 4. I did my own laundry. I got a job as a young teen to buy my own clothes, music, and a drum set. I worked for everything I had from that age. I paid rent after my parents divorced.

What's a real man? Can't tell ya.

Who am I? I could tell you but it would bore you to tears. :)

I've spent a good part of my life trying to figure out if who I am is what I was supposed to be.  H*ll I never made it as a 90's guy and now I'm pretty certain I'm not gonna make it as a 21st Century guy.

Quite awhile back I decided that trying to reinvent myself everytime some goofy pop psychologist came up with a new version of what a man should be took too much time and just confused me even more.

So I'm me.  To a certain extent I'm a walking, talking anachronism.  A product of the times when I was born and raised.  And by and large I don't think that's too bad.

I still hold doors and chairs for ladies.  Why?  It's a sign of respect.  It's not that I don't think they are capable.  Of course they are.  If they don't like it, that's okay with me.  If a lady tells me not to I won't.

I won't put up with bigots, charlatans, cheats, liars,  or folks who abuse women, children, animals or people who are weaker than they are.

I listen.  Most people will tell you nearly everything you need to know to get along with them if you just listen.  Sometimes people tell me things that I realize mean I'm never going to be able to get along with them.  That's okay too.  Not everyone can get along with everyone else.

For a long time now a "real man" has been expected to be sensitive.  I never did quite figure out what that meant.  I respect others, I treat them fairly and I don't take unfair advantage.  I don't take what's not mine.  I live my life according to a fairly simple code.  My honor and my integrity are very important to me.  That's part of my dad's legacy.  He didn't have money or property to leave me but he did instill in me a strong sense of what's right and wrong and he left me with a very strong work ethic and the idea that hard work will be rewarded.  When someone needs help, I'll help them.  When they need sympathy, I'll sympathize.  If somebody needs a hug I'm there.  Being who I am, of course, I don't go around hugging men.  For the most part a handshake, a pat on the back and an understanding word or two seems to convey the message pretty well between men.

I've never tried to "get in touch with my feminine side".  I checked and I don't have one.

I give everyone a chance.  Sometimes I give them two or three.

Despite lots of similiarities I think men and women are different.  I don't think one is better than the other and I don't think one is inferior.  I think they are different but equal.  Men don't get PMS and women don't have prostate problems.  It's not good, it's not bad it's just reality.

I don't expect others to live up to my standards.  That's their choice.  But I prefer not to hang around where I'm not wanted or respected.

I'm not disappointed when I'm not treated fairly or with respect.  I have come to exepct that.  It saddens me because I think the world could use a whole lot more of both of those things.

I don't know if that adds up to a "real man" or not.  At this point I'm too far down the road to care.  What I do know is that I can be trusted.  If you need someone at your back, I'm the kind of person you'd like to have there.  But I'm not a pushover.  When push comes to shove I don't think you'd probably want to mess with me.  And as I see it, part of my job is to see that things don't get that serious.

Larry

yep this is the real me.

what you see if what you get.  i, like some others, do not have time for negative people.  i am fun loving and my friendships last a lifetime.

i am carefree to an extent, very spontaneous and love people.

i know i get judged as a rear end pit, just ask isis.  she was very, shall we say not taken with me when we first met.  then one night we just sat around and talked.  we've been together ever since.

i am a very real person.  i live in the moment.

life is too short to be anvil (i think i just slipped by the mods hahaha).

have a great day everyone.  live it to the fullest.

Same here,  I'm a tenacious fighter in real.  Yet like most men,  I also occassionally need to be burped, swaddled, and have my diaper's changed

Yes, this is the real me, but you might remember me best for my role as "Rerun" on the 1970s sit-com "What's Happening!"

I have a lot in common with most of the guys here. I also am very different in some ways too.

There, I hope that clears it all up.

Thanks..many times when the writers got stuck for a piece of business they would just write "RRD" (Rerun Dances) into the script somewhere.

The real me, hmmmm, I only come in one flavour.  I am whom you see and I always try to come across sincerely ….I am totally down to earth and honest in all aspects.  Whenever I say something, I MEAN it.  .  I usually assume others are the same and I end up being hurt sometimes, I can be quite sensitive.  I am very turned off by any type of phoniness.  I speak my mind quite openly at times, though I try hard not to hurt anyone feelings in the process (which sometimes happens though).

I’m not one who always wants to be center stage; I believe everyone should have their time to shine.  I often sit back and just watch….but when I feel it’s my turn…WhooooHoooo!  Watch Out!  This is especially true when I get up to sing.  ….I love to LAUGH and I love to have a good time.  I am a firm believer of the statement, “that no one is promised tomorrow”, and I try to be as happy and fulfilled with each day as I can.

I believe in justice.   If I see anything going down unbalanced, someone being stepped on or being made an underdog, so to speak, it’s very difficult for me to control myself from stepping in and trying to correct it.  It’s got me into trouble now and then, but it was worth it.

I am a loyal and dedicated person, to family, and friends.  I am there for them no matter what, anytime.

Sometimes, people do get the wrong impression of me at first, but as we all know, first impressions are really not too concrete.  If people stick around long enough, eventually they find out just what makes me tick, and they find out I’m not too bad after all.   :)

There are also a lot of people who choose to use the British or Canadian spelling of some words.

hmmm

The real me? I am the only one who will ever know. I can't even be sure that I know myself.

Let's see-
I am a "What you see is what you get".  I no longer believe in first opinions of one.  I have found it to not be true in most cases.  I believe in giving everyone a second chance, and sometimes I think I am too caring.  I love with my heart, and sometimes have left it interfere with reality.  When I love someone, I have been told I love too much.  How can you love someone too much?  Not a jealous person, so that never made any sense to me.
I believe everyone deserves a fair deal.  I would be the first to help someone in need, and put thier needs before mine.
I have had to learn a lot of lessons the hard way.  But I have improved because of that.  I believe I am a better person for all that has been thrown at me.  Would  I do the same things over if I had the chance again?  Probably.  At least most of them.  I don't look at my past as pathetic, poor me, but as an education.  One that has me a stronger person.

It takes a long time to get to know people online.  Not everyone has the education, interest, or gift of composition. It's not fair to dislike certain people because they just haven't learned how to express themselves on certain internet venues, or in typed composition IMHO...  Learning the internet is a whole type of reality within itself..  There are subtle nuances, and those of us with over 10 year internet experience do have an advantage over those that just recently got internet accounts... I was once a newbie on the internet, full of bravato, arrogance..and trying to "prove something" too...

There are VERY few I don't like here.  This is a "type" of real for most.. Yet only a VERY small part of who we really are, and how we conduct ourselves in different situations.

Ok, I just bought Avatar priveleges, so now, hopefully, everyone can see the real me.  LOL

I'm not really sure who the real me is. In social situations I'm pretty shy until I get to know people, yet I sing on stage, DJ, do some stand up comedy, and sell stuff to people I've never met before. I guess I'm more comfortable acting, or playing a part than I am just being myself. I'm not sure, why. I really DO like me. In fact I'm one of the nicest guys I've ever met. :) I've been told that I don't make a very good first impression, by people that have ended up being my closest friends. I tend to come across as stand-offish, not too friendly, and maybe a little conceited. When people get to know me, they find I'm very friendly, polite, funny, pasionate about what I believe in, and intelligent.

I look like a red-necked biker but I've never owned a motorcycle. I'm a conservative republican patriotic born-again Christian, but I hang out in bars 3 or 4 nights a week singing karaoke, shooting pool, smoking cigarettes and drinking beer. I'm equally comfortable in church, a formal restaurant, a biker bar, or a yuppie dance club. Most of my friends are 5 to 15 years younger than me but all my serious relationships have been with women 5 to 12 years older than me. Musically, I listen to everything from Johnny Cash and Toby Keith to Metalica, Eminem, Nine Inch Nails, and Snoop Dogg, but I prefer modern rock at the moment.

I guess I'm somewhat of a chameleon, able to easily adapt to my environment. Does that mean that I'm phony, or that I don't have any real personality of my own? I don't think so. These are all different aspects of who I really am. Most people only see a small portion of the real me - the portion that I feel comfortable exposing to them, or the portion that I feel they will feel comfortable associating with.

On line here in the KS forum, I'm as honest as I know how to be about how I portray myself, but karaoke and on-line coversation in general is just a small part of who I am.

I'm deep. I'm complex. I'm hungry. I'm Superman!  LMAO
