Jerry, to be honest,  my own feeling is yeah,  he's good, but at 14 to be taking a lionel Richie (commodores) type chorus  A-E-G-D, and sing ballad over it isn't impressive... I wish I had tapes of a few of the Jr High kids I heard doing some amazing compositions... Something like the chorus to "This is your life", or the progression in James Gang's  "Tend my Garden" has been done by everyone and their brother..

That 9 year old "Erica Marks" was quite good... You know what I think they probably do.... They let some of the technique stuff slide by, in order to enable these kids to feel the expression, and get into the style first.... Yet as you say.... In a short time, the instructors will need to clamp down on some of those rough edges..... Yet WOW...amazing !

LOL

WHen you think about it, there's a huge psychology involved in getting these kid's loving performing, and the positive attention alone starts feeding the cycle... A few of you have taught education,  not sure about elementary school aged kids,  yet how strict can you really be in a contemporary style with them if you want them to enjoy getting attention from their natural ability, and some training, starting to see why it pays to go the whole distance at that point.....  If you are too strict with them, it probably overwhelms many of them.... There's a whole area of teaching that deals with teaching youngster's this talented... Few would have a clue how to do it.... How to nurture this type ability, without inundating the kid's with discipline and driving them out've an area they show such promise in.

The thing about Shirley Temple was she sang appropriate to her age. Judy Garland had a fully mature voice when she made "Wizard" at 16.  I was just listening to her tonight in some old movie.  She was a treasure.

This subject came up with my vocal teacher somehow.  I was talking about these little 5 year olds coming out and singing like Whitney Houston.  Her take on this was this should be avoided at all costs. A child's vocal equipment is not capable of sustaining  that style of singing properly and could cause damage.  She pointed out to me several younger students she had whose parents would take them in and have the aspiring tot sing in their own mock style of say, Celine Dion.  She would have to re-train them from the ground up and at a pace commiserate with their age and physical abilties.

A very good example of this is a youngster named Andrea McArdle, who starred in "Annie" a long time ago.  Her big number of course (and I get unbidden headaches just thinking of it now) was "Tomorrow", which she belted out at full force, full of vibrato (or what sounded like the real article) and at the top of her lungs.  She eventually developed nodules around her vocal cords and had to semi-retire for a lengthy period.

Uncle Michael's take on kids sounding "mature" is: I just don't think it's very cute and in fact, I find it rather distasteful when I watch a 7 year old boppin' on down on some televised talent show emulating (and worse, dressing like) Jessica Simpson (and don't get me started on that now, either!).

Excellent Point Michael.  Especially in todays world..

It makes sense I suppose that it's putting tremendous strain on vocal chords that aren't ready to sing with that strong style, timbre, etc.... THey end up with nodules, or polyps as a result, it's NOT worth it.... they need to be allowed to progress naturally...  Make ALOT of sense what you post !

This youngster on drums blew me away    Hope he doesn't end up with crippling arthritis by his 9th birthday.  Did any of you catch that additionall stunt,  his right handed stick twirling while doing the one hand soloing ?

I need to find a few more 2 year old concert master's before I crash...LOL... See what else exists in the way of these young amazing musicians...
