Well i didn't download the documents but one of them mentions The Karaoke Channel, which I find strange because Soundchoice doesn't own those tracks anymore -James |

They also mention the Spotlight, Foundation, and Star series. I guess that's just because they would be the same tracks. I can't think of another reason they would be mentioned since they have been out of production for so long. Per Justia, it's not just corporate v. corporate, they also list Kurt as a separate defendant (along with Global). |

Mike D DOES have a point, of which you did not address. IF SC is in the wrong, will you be cheering for Sony the way you have cheered for SC all this time. Answer the question!!! |

Believe it or not, this is a no win situation for KJs either way. If SC and Kurt lose we could be rid of them, but the karaoke production biz will take an even bigger hit that it already has, with sources dwindling - possibly to naught- for an even longer time. If Sony loses we're still stuck with a copyright troll continuously stirring the pot, making venues paranoid, and crapping on our industry in general. Meh..... |

I think you're over-stressing it a bit. I know of tons of shows where KJs haven't bought anything new in YEARS, and they have very successfully crowded shows. Going by the logic in your point-of-view, the only KJs that this would affect, would be those who have not made any real investment in a library already. Most of the KJs I know have at least 5K songs, which seems to be plenty to run a successful show with... of course, the more you have, the better your selection can be. The new music that's coming out today, isn't really that important. As Lonnie has pointed out many times, most of the new stuff that comes out today is just the "Flavor of the Month," and the fad passes away very quickly. You might get a request for some of the newer Billboard Top-100 songs tonight at your show, but in two or 3 months, that song will be long forgotten, and "My Way" and "Sweet Caroline" and "I Will Survive" will still get sung and cheered for at your shows. |

The only requests for newer music that I get is not from younger people, it is from some of my older singers (65+) trying to regain some youth. Then when the song is sung only by them it goes into hibernation. Music has to have staying power for me to want to purchase. |

They are defending their intellectual property on their trademark which the law allows for. Venues that are paranoid should educate themselves and then question the KJ's they hire, thus improving the state of the industry for all of us. It is the pirates that are crapping on the industry, not a company trying to protect their product. |

I agree Chris. If I had to depend on karaoke to make a living I would go broke. People that don't pay for music will do a gig for 100.00 a night. Who can make a living competing with that. I couldn't |

I am in a unique situation. My karaoke business pays every bill I have including growing the karaoke business itself. I have enough left over to save, while still being able to vacation and entertain myself. But I also operate at a different scale AND I am super aggressive. That said, I took on a day job for the sole purpose of paying off my mortgage more quickly and dumping every other left over penny into retirement and investments. I can absolutely survive very comfortably on karaoke alone and I intend to continue to be aggressive about maintaining and growing the business. Working a full time job and running a full time business is brutally stressful, but I play pretty hard and have been able to manage it thus far. That may change after Jan 1st as my day job morphs a little. i may drop it and do just karaoke. |

Chris: As far as what SC claims to be doing- whatever. Been argued, they lost any credibility, and all but a very few jumped ship. The point is that the venues ARE paranoid and there is considerable damage to the industry done by SC Cue, while I agree that newer music is not the keeper that the older, more singable stuff is, l do not believe that losing ANY positive option can be of benefit to an industry. |

If venues are so paranoid about SC then why do they keep hiring so many pirates? They don't seem too intimidated to me. Just a few nights ago it was commented to me that for so long any karaoke show around was geared to just old people. Young people are happy to have songs that mean something to them even if it is just the flavor of the month. And a few of the new songs do stick just as a few of the thousands of songs we listened to each year when we were young lasted through the ages. We've just had 40 or 50 years to accumulate them. Half the problem I have with the younguns thinking DJ is much more cool is because they think karaoke is a bunch of old people singing "My Way." They are surprised that I have new songs. Then they get disappointed because I don't have every new song as soon as it comes out. I don't have the more eclectic type music that they listen to that might not be top ten. I am sorry to see PHM go because I think he was onto something with his Indie music--it was just that he ran out of time for that audience to find him. I'm too old to pretend to be cool and do a young only show and I can't take the fights and the vomit but there is definitely a market for it. I have to have a variety because in small areas there aren't the numbers to specialize but I can get anything from Loretta Lynn to Sam Smith to Iron Maiden to Frozen to even Latin in one show. People get excited and it adds energy when I get in new hits even if I have to keep buying more new hits to keep that going. |
