i think most that don't display the manu's identifier is because they don't want their books to identify a specific brand so they don't get sued...... for pirated music.....

Highly doubtful - that could possibly apply to a few paranoid people or those with loaded hard drives from ebay. This started back in the mid 90's with disc users like I said and has gotten worse from there. With computer users i've talked with on the MTU forums, many of those people don't even list numbers at all anymore. Those that don't list any number or do list the generic number that Hoster assigns the disc when it's originally imported, many do list manu codes in the title line (feature of Hoster) so there are no repeat lines of the same song listing. Pro Tip: After searching on Google for 4 weeks straight, I was able to find large capacity hard drives without any songs on them..

mightywiz wrote: what happened to the posts from before mine? I split it into two topics, one prior to you injecting comments about piracy and one after. Our policy is to try to make sure that the topics in all forums don't inevitably move toward one topic. If it had been central to the thread topic, it would have been left alone. But I think it was unlikely to be a major factor in the decision, and it was peripheral. In any case, if there was going to be further discussion about the piracy part then I wanted it to be in the Legalities forum. Again, I ask that when you consider talking about piracy outside that forum, decide whether it's necessary to bring it up, and then if it is necessary, consider making a new topic about it.

Well, now that it's in the Piracy Forum: I might hazard another guess, though I'm sure that it is not an all-encompassing explaination. Maybe the pirate drives don't come with the mfr. IDs? If they don't then books made from that database wouldn't show IDs either. In other words it may not be a host choice. As a Luddite, this is purely a guess. Of course, I don't think a pirate will come forth and confirm it in the near future....

Possible. If they come on those drives with no manu indication or any kind of identifier in the song, there is no way a pirate kj could know by searching which brand is which.

The standard pirate load-out I have seen, the manufacturer codes are included, albeit in an inconsistent fashion.

I no longer list manu codes in my books for only one reason. I own about 32000 cuts in one system and 31000 in the other , after I delete dupes my books are 400 to 420 pages (210 double sided) if printed artist title disk #, cut #. this requires single column in excel if I expect anyone to read it. By removing the disk + cut, I can print 2 columns per page and cut the books to about 130 double sided pages. This cuts my printing costs almost in half. I print a copy of my Certs in the books and have the stickers on my laptops, so if an investigator stops in he/she would have to be an idiot to miss them and it would give me ammunition in a defamation or harassment counter suit (i do this on the advice of my attorney). Never thought I would have to consult her about how I run a show, but I did 2 years ago.

Printing costs/space is a reason for us, too, even with much less songs. I don't print every version we have but do put the codes on the versions that are in the book. Those who care can skip or ask if it isn't what they want and those who don't have a clue won't be accidently subjecting us to the Backstage Version of the Eagles Desperado because they didn't know to pick Zoom.
The two times I saw books by those I knew for sure were pirates (due to bragging/invites to join file sharing, etc.) one point of their pride was having every version of every song so the manus were listed. It was a pain in the whatever to weed through columns of the same song. The song lists needed two New York sized phone book binders to cover the alphabet and one got knocked off the counter above where I was sitting and about broke my neck.
Since the suits started, a few people in our area have cut their books down to only listing Party Tyme or even though they are advertising 150,000 songs are using their old sets of books that don't list as many songs and there weren't brands listed. I don't know if it is coincidence.
