You'll love this one. I went out looking at our three other KJ's with Wednesday gigs here. All three were dirty with SC and CB on laptops. One venue really blew me away. I asked for a songbook and he handed me a Sound Choice songbook. Never seen one before. It had the CD#s on the right side of the page like he was legit. It included alot of discontinued CD's also... Where did he get that?

I'd be calling those SC investigators if I were you... they should jump right on that revenue opportunity.

I don't understand the question? "Where did he get that?"

answer he made it!

Don't you make your song books?
With a program like Latshaw's Song List Generator you can
pick out just what you want to publish.

or did I read something wrong....

Why would he post the CD#'s if he didn't have the CD's?
For a disc based only KJ he would have to have the #'s in the book
so the customer could put them on the slip. Without them he
would have to look at some other source.
Sounds like he might have been disc based at one time and just
kept the #'s in the book or it's a book from someone he copied
their drive from and their book too.

Here is the Gem series listing by artist:

I doubt it was his database because while I was there I saw MM and CB also, why not have that in his book also? It wasn't the Gem series either. No this looked like someone did generate this list of just SC for the purpose of accompaning a download of their songs...
Another bar I asked if he had Sweet Caroline in SC. He said he wasn't sure which brand he had, but said he had more than one. Sure enough it was SC, then I sang Bad To The Bone (SC) right after that. His book was all names no numbers...

I don't print the disc number or manufacturer in my books. This frees up horizontal space to allow me to print long song titles or artist names. Karma finds all the versions and also track singer history so I can play the version I think is best or one they select.

The point being, not everyone who skips printing Disc#/Manufacturer is automatically a pirate or illegal. I do note it as a yellow flag though and consider that as one piece of many in helping me determine if I think someone is a pirate or illegal.

Well Chris I don't print Disc#/Manufacturer in my books. But if you want to see all my disc I will be glad to show you. The reason I don't is the same reason you don't to free up space in my books. Now I do have 2 master books one by Artist and one by Title that show the manufacturer and all of the duplicates that I have. So if someone is looking for a specific version they can easily find it.

we do not post manu or discs # in our books....if we did we would have to split our books like an encyclopedia. If a customer wishes a specific Manu we will play that version if we have it. Sometimes when singers try a new song we go tru a number of manus to find the one they like best.

I, like KjAthena, don't use Manu's in my song books either. In spite of having lot of CD's (40000+ songs all on cd) I am able to keep my books down to a manageable size of about 95 pages (190 printed double sided). They are 12 point font, 2 column. I too try different versions with Karma until I find the best one for my singers. With accurate naming of all the songs Karma makes picking another version of that song a breeze.

I have found that using high quality paper 28-32 lb wieght, and laser printer, I have been able to NOT use clear sleeves, which greatly reduces the weight and size of the books.

I print the Manu and Disc number in my books. Sometimes, having the Manu code listed is not enough. There are some cases where the Manu did a song on one disc bad, and improved it on another... Case-in-point: Check out PS 1016 for Music of the night, and compare it to PS 1054. PS 1054 is the better version. If I came to your show, would you be able to play me that specific version, or just tell me that you have it on PS?

We always have the manu and disc numbers in the books. This way we have one record of what we have with no confusion for anyone. For those who do not use manu numbers, do you have them stored elsewhere? If you do then by changing the numbering, you are doubling your work.

i just post the artist, title, and all the versions
Madonna | Like A Virgin | DK, SC, MM, TT

i have been considering grabbing a few of these instead of books

good reviews and 8 hr battery life :dontknow: could be cool, and for $40.00, i doubt it would walk, but if it did, for that price....i could stomach it.

If I had that specific version i'd be able to tell you exactly which version (number), but mine is on SC.... Just bring in your disc!

Sweet! I have been waiting for these things to get down that low. Just a basic simple e-reader with no frills. I do plan on moving in this direction as well.

@cue & @timber

On my hard drive I am very meticulous with file naming. Thus, in Karma, as I type in "Music of the night" it would reveal all versions including multiple PS if I have them. You could tell me at that point to use a specific disc number/track which Karma then stores to your name so I can grab that version later.

I strip out the Disc/track/manu from my song books only.

If you could password protect it and make it clear that it isn't useful for anything else, I would think it would work well....

I don't print the manu's in my books either... I get tired of people asking what SC or MM or...whatever means. The people that know, ask me if I have a certain brand and Karma tells me. Latshaws Song Book Creator allows me to leave the disc numbers on my files but print the books without them. This also saves space... every little bit helps when the book gets above 150 pages. Larger binders don't hold up well, so it's nice to keep the number of pages as low as I can.
That was part of going digital... the books got too big to leave the numbers in. I had stopped adding addendum's because of it. I had a master book that was huge!

Well it's going to be a test anyway. If they are cheap enough, not going to worry about it. These are still a little more than i'd like to spend to replace the majority of the books, but it is closer to the ballpark for a 1 or 2 test.

Chip,
people say the same thing about wireless mics but i have never had one walk. that is why i was looking at just a stupid reader. it's kinda useless to anyone and at $40.00, worth a risk.
just thinking out loud about it.
