SOPA and PIPA will not stop piracy.

this is from craigslist.com

Corporate supporters of HR3261 (SOPA) and S968 (PIPA) demand the ability to take down any web site that affects their profits -- without due process or judicial oversight -- in the name of combating "online piracy." Hoping you won't notice or care, quite a few of our Public Servants want to give them that right.

Believe it or not, Monster Cable (remember "Monster Park"?) considers craigslist a "rogue site" for blacklisting and takedown under PIPA - apparently 2nd hand sales of stereo cables by CL users is reducing Monster's sales of new cables.

Supporters of SOPA: RIAA, MPAA, News Corp, TimeWarner, Walmart, Nike, Tiffany, Chanel, Rolex, Sony, Juicy Couture, Ralph Lauren, VISA, Mastercard, Comcast, ABC, Dow Chemical, Monster Cable, Teamsters, Rupert Murdoch, Lamar Smith (R-TX), John Conyers (D-MI)

The best 1 minute explanation of the consequences of SOPA/PIPA that there is.

It might be a little different if SOPA/PIPA would actually stop piracy....but expanding government power to achieve virtually nothing, ala TSA, doesn't make sense to me.

Fact is, "a court order" isn't good enough. Whose court? A tame court that claims jurisdiction over the entire world? And that can TAKE DOWN CONTENT and DESTROY BUSINESSES without the formality of a trial?

SOPA/PIPA would work as well as CAN-SPAM has. As well at the TSA has. And would have enormous potential for destroying freedom.

Even if passed the bills would not be as purposed! They will be modified heavily before it's all over! This is just a ploy to get the internet under the FCC!

If it is try, that he only provided links to the content, I wonder why the US gov hasn't gone after Google, Yahoo, MSN/Bing, or any of the other major search providers? Oh yeah, they have DEEP pockets and would be able to put up a good fight. This is just a easy way for a president to be set by going after a little guy.

jerry you know it's always the fault of law enforcement and government and not the criminal. The world is changing, criminals can't hide anymore. More and more illegal assets and bank accounts are being seized. I equate this as if he were in some place that pedophillia is legal and was telling people how to access and make a profit to boot. I am still wondering why people think music, movies, etc should be free just because someone somewhere downloads it on the net.
