It's still has to do with illegal media - which has been talked about in the past as well. No harm.

I see this as very relevant to karaoke piracy.
This is a good example of what should be done to fight piracy in karaoke. Go after the distributor. He was an original source of distribution of the pirated movie. Who knows what else he distributed just because he had the ability. Chances are his pirate days are over. With enough publicity, perhaps a few other original source pirates will stop or be stopped.
He was found and arrested in a matter of a few months, and only two years later his case is closed. There are plenty of karaoke pirates who have been openly distributing material for many years who are easier to find.
News of cases like this one should be a daily occurance. Unfortunately, without big Hollywood backing and publicity, there seems to be little interest in solving the problem at the source of the problem.

Doesn't mention the movie studio offering to sell him their most popular movies at a discount and allowing him to continue using them for his personal use. Guess some companies ARE serious about stopping piracy instead of trolling for customers.

Also remember that was a POLICE action, not the owners' action. It was a criminal case, not a civil case. It would be nice to see some police action.

this has nothing to do with this forum at all. he was distributing copies of the movie. that is what they busted him for. if the karaoke manus would do the same it would be more relevant. now, if the movie producers went after everyone copying their dvd to their computer, then it would also be relevant.
hmmmm.......2 years start to finish................if only we could get those kind of results.

"Sanchez pleaded guilty in March to one count of uploading a copyrighted work being prepared for commercial distribution." It was a civil case based on the Digital Millennium Copyright Act of 1998 which adds civil remedies and criminal penalties for violating the prohibitions. http://www.copyright.gov/legislation/dmca.pdf

Workmen, I know very well there are both civil and criminal remedies under the Copyright Act. LEO laid the criminal charges, not 20th Century Fox. If you dug a little further, the criminal charges were laid by the FBI as a result of their investigation. http://www.cbc.ca/news/arts/story/2011/ ... d=809afa62

Your link never said it was prosecuted or even laid by the FBI, it said they investigated the case along with Motion Picture Association of America. Fox prosecuted this man for uploading its product under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act of 1998, they suffered the loss. He got a criminal penalty under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act of 1998 civil case. Had he been proven to have stoled the product that would have been criminal and 1 year would have not even been close to the penalty! http://mediadecoder.blogs.nytimes.com/2 ... d-pirates/

Workmen, only Law Enforcement can lay criminal charges. This person was arrested, charged and sentenced to prison for criminal acts. Fox did not and could not criminally prosecute him, the FBI did. Fox co-operated and assisted the FBI in their investigation.
One CANNOT be jailed for civil offences. Now Fox can sue to recover their losses. This would be separate case but the same incident.
An example would be OJ. He was arrested and charge criminally by police and in that case acquitted. But he was successfully sued civilly for the basically same thing, the death of his ex and her friend.
