The new ABC TV Show "Karaoke Battle USA" uses Stingray Music's Karaoke Channel content for the TV broadcast. As many know, this is the same music that Sound Choice produced.
I'm wondering if anti-piracy advertisements during the broadcasts would help in the fight.
I've added a poll to see what everyone thinks.

That would be great. What we have encountered is a lot of singer "entitlement" as far as seeing nothing wrong with stolen music both at shows and for home use and some raising of awareness on that show would be a good start.

Yeah leopard. I have many singers that love American Idol so much that they are also interested in this new show.
If they run anti-piracy information, not only would this would help educate, but add more credibility to the cause.
Sound bites like, "Piracy hurts singers too." "Does your show use the same music we use on the show legitimately?"
Any more ideas?

Not a bad idea. It certainly can't hurt.

that would also give us the credibility when we say it, we don't sound like we are just trying to bash that other host who "has everything or can get it right now".

I thought Stingray Music couldn't be used commercially only for home use. Kinda blurs the lines doesn't it?
Are you sure that it is Stingray?

Are you sure that it is Stingray? Not if you consider that Stingray can give and take away any right to their product that they choose to.

So who would pay the big network advertising bill on ABC? Stingray?

Are you sure that it is Stingray? Stingray owns The Karaoke Channel & their logo appeared on a lyric screen during the show at one point. You can check the website for verification of Stingray's ownership. http://www.thekaraokechannel.com/

Since Stingray has supplied the content to the show, they may be able to write in a 10 second sound bite of the judges commenting about piracy in the show itself. They wouldn't need to mention any specific manu's. Of course this may be something that would need to be discussed in a new contract if the show is picked up for a second season. A KJ friend of mine did preliminaries at the state level this year & told me all the shows are already in the can. Also at the preliminaries, the approved content for the contest was 95% SC & 5% CB. (This is revised from my earlier post in another thread where I stated a 90% to 10% split) ~ So it seems that SC & CB have some interest in the show as well. As far as your question bird, someone would have to pay something whether it's by barter or cold cash. I would think that the content providers could lobby some sort of quick sound bite incorporated into the show & not have to buy airtime on the network.

What we have encountered is a lot of singer "entitlement" as far as seeing nothing wrong with stolen music both at shows and for home use and some raising of awareness on that show would be a good start. Here lies the rub, it is not just singer "entitlement", it's society as a whole that feels entitled. I don't have a problem with people entering into to a contract with the government, after all that is what are constitution is all about, government by contract. Each side in the contract having what they have to do laid out and understood. That is the only way a large modern society can function, where everyone depends on somebody else. Few individuals raise their own food, make their own clothes, furniture, etc.etc.etc. It would seem that most of the younger folks in our current society have embraced the computer age. They feel that free flow of information has entitled them to disregard, protections placed on intellectual content of copyrighted material. Although it is just not the young I have seen seniors that do karaoke telling me they have hard drives filled with karaoke also. Like piracy it seems to be wide spread, and a great many people believe they have a right to all information, without any limits. The computer is a two edged sword, great things can be done with it, as well as more sinister applications of the new technology. In the book the "The God Father" the old don stated "A man with a briefcase can steal more than a 100 men with a gun". We can see with piracy and computers that a person can now out do the man with the briefcase, that is why even lawyers have an up hill battle in court. You can advertise and it may make some pause and think, then I feel they will continue what they are doing since there is safety in numbers. The majority in this country has always ruled, it might not be right, it might not be fair and in the case of the Indians and the slaves not even just. To understand who we are as a people, you really have to step back and look at the history of this country. Then you will realize that a great deal of the wealth of this land was brought forth by taking advantage of large portions of the population, of this great country of ours.

So what happens if a singer wants to sing a song that neither SC or CB makes what Manu do they use then?

There is also the question of maybe wanting to do something current like say since SC stopped production! If 95% of the content is SC, is the 5% CB the new material, since they are still making new product?

Stingray can allow their music to be used by anyone they want. For the lyrics to be legal Karaoke Battle/ABC have to pay fees for broadcasting and sync which is not a right that stingray holds, but the original IP holder.
This, in my non professional opinion, is why Stingray/Karoke Channel cannot sell commercial downloads THEMSELVES.
If someone else had the licensing for commercial downloads covered, that would be a different story

Apparently there is only a certain library available to contestants just like any other karaoke show, like mine, that doesn't have every song ever made unless a contestant could use their own disc. I don't know the rules. Contact Karaoke Battle USA for the answer if you like & I will ask my KJ friend & get back to you. jclaydon wrote: Stingray can allow their music to be used by anyone they want. From what I watched, the show only showed screen lyrics from a stage monitor, that the audience could see, in a wide shot once in a while as the performance was going on. Also the songs were deeply edited for time.

Like many contests sponsored by a manu (or two), there are rules that limit you to the library offered. Even though it's a reality show contest, wouldn't be any different. I remember the first couple years of American Idol, the contestants only had a certain catalog they could perform (not karaoke no, but same premise).

What I found interesting was, the songs the contestants are choosing to sing are basically the same ones we hear each week at our show. We had a guy in his 40s that had watched and thought that he could do as well as the guy who sang HIS song so he is now interested in looking for contests to enter--so such as it is, the show may, indeed stir up some renewed excitement over karaoke.
Also, it gives hosts new material--I have instructed the boyfriend that the next time the singer in question does "his" song, the boyfriend needs to comment, "OOOOOH, you just gave me MAN CHILLS!"

Has anybody read the rules of this show? Lots of dos and don'ts. Funniest thing I saw was:
V. PRIZES: Each of the two (2) Winners will receive: one (1) home use, pedestal style Karaoke machine; and, one (1) $100 on-line music gift card. ARV of all prizes: $798.
Ohhh that really makes me wanna go on national TV.
