Well, being a NY-er, I recognized quite a few of the Venue names listed, but I have never been to those places. As for the KJ's (and or Company Names) listed, I recognize a few of them, and I used to go to some of their shows years ago. Back then, I knew some of them to have original discs, so I am guessing that these few (that I knew) were hit just because they are now (probably) running their shows off of a PC (and not because they obtained their music illegally).
Of all the names listed in the two cases filed, I recognized one specific name in there, who I know was served with one of those letters from SC last year. When I had asked him about it (at that time), he said that he was having his Lawyers look at it (and didn't want to talk about it any further). The ironic part of all this is, (allegedly) he was dropping names left and right to the Manufacturers (at least, that's what the word in the street was amongst my little Karaoke Community Grapevine). ALSO, I know this person never had a legal library when he was disc based (and I don't mean that he bought from companies that produced CDGs illegally and then went out of business). I guess his Lawyer/s haven't been of much help to him... Karma's a real zinger!!!
I only personally knew of 2 people who were served with letters from SC last year... the person I referred to above, and one other person who settled with SC by agreeing to purchase their GEM series (and he is not listed in the 2 cases that singyoassoff referenced here).

You're from NYC? Maybe we could meet sometime I'm not from NYC, but "mid-state". (Up-State to you Manhattanites who think anything north of White Plains is the boonies!) I do private parties all over the tri-state area and have run into some of those names. As for a meet up...only if there is beer.

Well, I know someone who does shows in the Greenwood Lake area (near Sterling Forest). I haven't been to one of her shows since she and her Husband sold their Bar, and she went mobil... it's been at least 6 years since I've seen her (but I'm on her mailing list). Are you anywhere in that region? You can e-mail me at cueball070358 at aol dot com.

Look at the size of their songbook! http://www.bigcitykaraoke.com/songbook.htmlWhen I saw that I said to myself my old book was 235 pages so that isn't really that many songs then I realized that my old books were double columns at 12 font, the new books are 4 column at 10 font (big difference only 100 pages) With an average of 240 per page that is something over 50,000 song titles and that book list repeats (a lot of them) certainly not impossible to legally acumulate that many in a system, I don't know what font she is using because I only have 48 lines on my book and she has 60+. But I have been accumulating for a few years and my book shows roughly 14,000 non repeated titles (not that I was able to eliminate all repeats, too much work) with repeats I am well over 20,000 titles in one system, the second system is a lot easier 6,000 titles including repeats

Well, I'm familiar with a few of those names as well. However, one name in particular proves to be that SC has NOT improved their "investigative" techniques.
On the second docket is Sing Sing. While they do have shows in NY, they are based in NJ, and are a large multi-rigger. They were also the largest brick & morter karaoke supply store in the area ( a BIG area)- and have been in business a couple of decades. Though they have gone PC in the last couple of years, they had been disc based for decades. This was a big karaoke STORE, folks, with gazillions of discs in stock.
They were both one of my suppliers AND my competition- I have nothing to gain by defending them. However, I know from many years of buying supplies ( equipment, DISCS, etc...) that they have as many discs as they need to run their shows. Not only enough for THEIR shows, but enough to supply a lot of karaoke hosts in the area. They haven't the need to pirate what they already stock.
Though the store ( The Karaoke Store & More ) has recently closed, they are still operating the karaoke business ( Sing Sing) for now. I believe the owner is finally retiring, but will probably sell the hosting business. I will say this: If he runs into trouble selling the business due to SC, it won't be Sing Sing that pays the tab. Not laid back, and with more resources than SC.
Yup, nothin' like deep investigatin'.....
What I DO find interesting is that on the first docket, I see that the SC has requested a JURY?

Well what do you know, Sing Sing has the same book as Karaoke Top Tunes NYC! Compare Sing Sing: http://karaokesingsing.com/page/song-list/To Karaoke Top Tunes: http://karaoketoptunes.com/song-searchI think Joe is mistaken but he has me on ignore so he won't see this important information further leaving him in the dark. Maybe Karaoke Top Tunes stole a hard drive from Sing Sing! Maybe they stole one of Sing Sing's books. But to go from a gazillion songs down to 20,000 in one day doesn't sound right! What Joe can't seem to get, is the fact that COPYING the TRADEMARK "WITHOUT PERMISSION" is the violation!

It's not the violation...it's the hook. It is what gets them in the door, but if it's the only violation, it won't be enough to keep them there, and it's gonna cost Sound Choice some serious money.

We had a store up here years ago (if you could call it that - never actually saw a storefront as he would bring what I wanted to my show - which was nice at the time). The owner would open all the new discs, put them on his CAVS machine, re-shrink wrap the disc & sell it as new. Then would make dups of his CAVS hard drive to use in multiple locations. Had EVERYTHING - literally since he was a dealer. He would also create custom discs for people (any brand, as many would fit @ $5 per song) - before custom discs were really sanctioned by the manus. Fortunately they closed down a few years back & do not believe they are doing anymore shows - that i've heard about anyway.

Sounds like the store that went out of business when the owner died in my area, only they just copied the disc onto several other discs and then shrunk wrapped the original since their systems were disc based. They were smart though and only did it to a small number of discs in their collection. They could have done it with every disc in the store.

However, in this case I was posting through 20 years of personal experience with Sing Sing. Not only were they not pirate, but when the store was active ( until VERY recently) they were authorized distributors of most of the largest karaoke brands of products. However, this may be a moot point. I have been informed of a post by Wall mentioning another Sing Sing- in this case the owners of 3 karaoke bars in NYC. I can't tell from the Justia document which one they mean, but it's possible that the Sing Sing that I spoke of isn't the one mentioned in the case. Gotta wait and see....

Yes, someone had to tell him after the fact of posting stuff without first researching the facts! Another reason Joe has me on ignore, I pull his covers!

So were the owners I spoke of. It's fairly easy (or at least it was when I looked into it) to become 'authorized distributors', just need a physical storefront & a minimum purchase. But like you said, your store is most likely not the one mentioned - just wait & see.
