Post subject: | Weird Things About Piracy Reporting Sites... |
I believe I have mentioned in the past that one of my friends and colleagues is a "cheerleader" type, and has no problem reporting pirates to the mfrs.- although at this point he's mostly given up because nothing ever happens. I have no problem with him simply because he only reports actual pirates, like the woman with 54,000 songs and less than 100 dics.. ANYWAY, he let me know 2 things: 1) The "Report" button on the SC site apparently now leads nowhere. The link is blank, except the url reads for KAPA, which I believe is now defunct. The "report" button has yet to be re-directed. 2) The following statement shows up on the KIAA site: "A Change of Direction for the KIAA Until further notice we will no longer be accepting memberships in the Karaoke Industry Alliance of America (KIAA). For the immediate future the main focus of the KIAA is, by necessity, going to be geared towards anti-piracy efforts." My question is, what would taking on new members have to do with anti-piracy? Wouldn't they want MORE members? No knocks intended here- I'm just confused by the whole thing.. |

Joe as far as #1 I have no idea 2) The following statement shows up on the KIAA site: "A Change of Direction for the KIAA Until further notice we will no longer be accepting memberships in the Karaoke Industry Alliance of America (KIAA). For the immediate future the main focus of the KIAA is, by necessity, going to be geared towards anti-piracy efforts." My question is, what would taking on new members have to do with anti-piracy? Wouldn't they want MORE members? No knocks intended here- I'm just confused by the whole thing..the reason for this is due to restructing....until a audit procedure and network can be put in place tru KIAA the manu's are no longer offering immunity with KIAA membership hope that was some help |

I have had no problems with reporting pirates via KIAA other than nothing ever being done about it. However, I think that what they are doing is accumulating information and using it whenever they go into a market for legal action. For instance, we know they have been in FL, AZ, TN etc. When they go in, I would think that they use the information provided by the various reporting sites. However, they can't be everywhere - not right now at least - which explains the inaction. They are probably getting their feet wet before they dive right in. |

I honestly thought the KIAA had been taken over by Sound Choice. A week after an SC cheerleader brought KIAA materials into my bar, the bar owner got a threatening letter from KIAA. I saw on the KIAA site that its "mission" had changed, I just assumed it had been "absorbed" into the Sound Choice campaign. |

Oh, and I am now certified by Sound Choice as an Original Disc User (although I am not listed on their chart of certified KJ's). |

Where does the link now lead? Joe it leads to a page with a PSA and the following info There are three ways to report piracy. Method 1: E-mail piracy@soundchoice.com Method 2: Call the Sound Choice Anti-Piracy Hotline at 800-788-4487. Method 3: Fill out an On-line Reporting form Method 4: Print and fill out this form and then fax (800-577-7464) or email to piracy@soundchoice.com. Sound Choice receives dozens of leads each month and is dedicated to acting on each one we receive. We evaluate every lead that comes in—and while we can't always communicate what we are doing with the leads for legal reasons, please know that each lead is taken very seriously and acted upon. So what happens when you report Karaoke music piracy? • Your lead is received by a team of individuals or sent to our private investigators who respond. We may send out an investigator to check out the allegedly illegal karaoke host to gather more information. • Education - A letter may be sent to the company, individual or Karaoke Host stating that they have been reported for allegedly copying, selling or using Sound Choice Karaoke music in an unauthorized manner. • A secret shopper may make a purchase from the company that was reported if it was a reseller. • The individual who submitted the lead may be contacted for further information/evidence (obtaining an invoice, or the Karaoke music). • If the gathered evidence regarding the company supports the claim of piracy, a cease and desist letter may be sent. • The evidence developed may also be used in a legal proceeding against the reported company. |
