I havent been to KS in a while now so this new forum about legalities is new to me. Can someone tell me what this audit is I keep reading of? Does it have to do with the illegal hard drives that are going around? The 1:1 ratio stuff? The original discs to show youre legal? In that case, I HOPE Im audited with about 90% of the rest of my town! It would stomp out ALOT of "I-wanna-be-a-karaoke-hosts"..How do I get them here or do I go somewhere special to be audited..
On a different note,a competitor of mine (actually NOT one of the "wanna-be -a karaoke-hosts" b/c I actually "think" the're legal ) nevertheless said they were "backed" by Sound Choice,is this what they mean,that theyve been audited ? How do you get "backed" by Sound Choice? I have been in business for 6 years incorporated for more than that but "dba" for 6,and I have heard nothing about being able to get "backed" by any one karaoke manufacturer. Am I mistaken? Is this what an audit does? Get you "backed" or "approved" in some way by the karaoke anufacturer? Im very interested to know what benefit these audits have for me.Thank you all for any advice/info you can give me..jeez go away for a while & come back a newbie  _________________ Kelley

I don't know anything about being backed but yes Sound Choice and Chartbuster do audits to see if you are 1:1 you can request an audit from either one and either will audit for SC CB and PHM, They will also audit your entire system for KIAA certification as well. Once you have been through the audit it is my understanding that they will let you know of gigs in your area for venues that are requesting "approved" (legal) KJs or they will tell requesting venues who the legal KJs are in the area. It is an easy process and there are more and more auditors being put into place around the country to speed up the processing.
As far as lawsuits being filed against pirates around the country they are happening, you just have to give them time to come to your area. Those that you know are pirates report them to one of the manufacturers with the company name venue name and date/time and the KJs name if you know it the more information you can include the better!

Kelly ask them to see the certificate of approval from SC I don't think they are as you are in Gainsville and the only KJ that I can see in FL is in Tampa quite a distance from you.

you can just e-mail any of the manus and they will let you know when they will be in your area. it's pretty painless, they look through your book and ask to see the disc with this song. the time is just on how big your system is. had mine in november and it went just fine. Kurt form Sound Choice did mine and we spent a couple hours and had some really great conversations about absolutely everything, it was actually fun.

KJAthena is setting up audits in tampa area. I am sure she will post on here when the auditor will be in the area and if it is convienient for you maybe you can get yours done then.

Awesome! Thank you all so much for the information..I think this is a great stride in weeding the bad from the good karaoke companies. I didnt realize that things were this progressed. Def good news for the honest ones out there!

Another quick question though..do you think that this list is up to date as far as being posted on the internet for us to see? I mean could there be people that have gotten audited that just arent on this list or entered in the computer some how yet?

Chartbuster also has the audited KJs listed as well. As far as how fast they update the list I do not know I would think there is probably some lag time between getting audited and getting listed.
However if they have been audited simply ask to see their certification.

Also, on the Sound Choice page at the bottom, it lists:
The KJs or Venues listed below (in alphabetical order by state, then city) have successfully settled with Sound Choice®.
FL Gainesville MrOrctober Entertainment Michael Davis
Would this be the person who states they are "backed" by Sound Choice?

was my mistake my own fault and to be truthful it wasnt even my Hard drive but whats done is done. they sent me a letter of intent.
The next day I wrote a check for $6900.00 and they sent me the Gem series. Ive had many talks with SC and The Harringtons. I run a hard drive with only the gem series and the few thousand other songs Have on Disc.
Im more into Producing my MrOctober show's and other events than doing Karaoke. I only host one weekly show and do an every other week show somewhere else. My money comes from the non karaoke stuff. 4 hours of Karaoke =$125.00 I can make that in one hour singing at a nursing home and four times that doing a MrOctober show.
actually Im expecting a call from Michael Finch from SC this morning to get my link right on their sight.
by the way the guy they sent out to bust me couldnt sing worth a darn
edit... just a side note.. another KJ here in Gainesville said anyone who paid was a fool he told SC to F off in october. I heard last week the sherrif came into their show and served them papers. wonder if it was SC papers.
Ive had nothing but good response's from the people at soundChoice and the Harrington's and feel I got a fair deal on the Gem series.
with all the different suits against IP and Music in general its great to know I dont need to worry about anything.

It also sucks that we in this town can only make the crappy $ you mention $125/night because people with the illegal hard drives that dont pay for their music & have crappy equipment can afford to charge that much..I dont really want to get into the illegal hd vs legal music argument with anyone here b/c as we all know its beating a dead horse! but..it really does make it hard on people that actually do pay for our music to make any profit. I dont mind at all competing with someone as an equal that pays for their stuff & charges a fair rate,but competing with people who dont pay for anything & undercut a legit companys price and actully get the job burns my arse!
