I agree, the high end stuff can actually technically sound close to the original instrument, but it isn't always so, and certainly not when we're talking about the karaoke tracks in the OP.

Remember that MIDI is just

it right every time, with no errors.

Problem with that is that it now loses much of the nuances of live play. It becomes dry, with no feeling. I can usually tell when drums are programmed, for instance. Perfect isn't always better.
Similar to losing the warm sound of LP's, when compared to CDs.

I agree, it's very clinical, but there is software that will insert 'feeling', but attempting to be more human. Most chart music doesn't care about feeling though. They just want acceptable music that will make a quick buck. Don't even care if the singer can sing. So long as the face fits, run 'em through Autotune, thanks to Simon Cowell - my hero.

Like I said.. MIDI has come a long way since my Mac Classic with a Sound Canvas days, but it's still not as convincing as the drum and piano sounds.

Listening to most of the examples on that page, lots of cool stuff.. but the driven stuff just sounds like an awful mid 80's Digitech processer.. RP-1 kinda sound.

Which.. might be great if you're doing a song from that era.

jerry12x.. that was some cool stuff.. definitely would be fun to play with.. but again.. at least to my ear.. sounded like 80's Digitech processed guitar.

A chunk or a fill here and there, you probably wouldn't be able to tell it's MIDI.. but a whole song and that's your only guitar? It would probably be pretty obvious.

A big chuck of what is in CDG come from MIDI. The karaoke tracks that you sing to are mostly created from MIDI. Any manu that claim that they use 'real' musician and musical instrument in all of their tracks is not telling the truth. And that is the truth.

Sure. MIDI Bass, MIDI Drums, MIDI Violin, MIDI Piano, absolutely..but do Stevie Ray Vaughn's Pride & Joy with a MIDI guitar sound and you'll have the version even guys like me say, "Dude.. I ain't singing to that'.

What sounds particularly bad with MIDI guitar is the string bends and trills.

Maybe I only notice it because i'm a guitar player.

Maybe thats why the rest of us miss it.
We all consider sound quality because that's what we do.
Most of us don't play guitar.
Then again...
Maybe your just too much of a purist.
Wish I was that good.

I have to agree with Cheese, much as it pains me to do so. He's right on this one.

I have to step back in at this point and make a point.............. This is the MOST educational site I've EVER been on.. it doesn't matter the question, if a person takes the time to read and think about each opinion and thought given they come up with a working "system" for themselves............. Thanks all and Keep it up, EVERY subject here turns into a forum of thought, discussion, humor, banter, oft times snideness/sarcasm/rudeness/belligerence BUT most AND best of all, Individuality! Peace, S.

I don't agree.
I think he's a purist.

Of all the midi guitar SoundChoice, SB et al use.

You have to be a guitarist and a half to spot the difference.

I cant.

Perhaps you can't tell, but I can. I don't play guitar, either.
Even SC and the BEST karaoke tracks have a hard time getting it totally right. Yes, they come close, but I've yet to hear "perfection" from a source other than the original.
Midi still sounds like midi, no matter how good the programs or programmers are.
Close, yes, but not the same.
And it still doesn't negate my point about the karaoke tracks of the OP. I KNOW they're going to be the bottom of the barrel and just the kind of garbage of which I'm speaking.

Gemini, maybe a bit of economics for you. You want new songs but that takes money to produce. If people are pirating music then the producers cannot make money in order to produce more, unless they are fools and want to lose their shirts.

Piracy was one of the main reasons why Canadian producers shut down. They wanted to do more but without money coming in from sales (due to piracy), they couldn't afford to do more.

Actually last week I was googling (.ca) for Toronto karaoke (moving there within a year) to get a feel for the market and the culture and I found a review that said one host is is very talented (they are looking for hosts with a big sense of humor and plenty of jokes) but was a bit lacking in song selection with only 35,000 songs.

That had to have been a typo. They must have meant 3,500 songs.

To a complete novice, 35,000 songs sounds like a lot.

Seasoned karaoke singers and those in the know understand it's not the total number of songs you have, but WHAT songs you have.

In the last 10 years, i'd be lucky to have had any more than 300 or 400 unique songs requested.

Hmmm.

I would actually like you to answer this one.
If you don't mind.
