Just an aside, because you folks are talking about advertising:

I used to advertise my shows on places like http://www.karaokelistings.com, but no longer am allowed. I also used to advertise in Stepping Out Magazine, the local entertainment mag, but since they are also online, I am no longer allowed. ALL of my venues have told me that at this point I can only do direct E-mails and texts. Why? SC- that's why. I tell them until I'm blue in the face that I only use original mfr's. discs in my shows, and they are safe. They don't care. SC has made enough of a PITA of themselves that they have heard, and want no waves. Yes, they are being ridiculous. Yes, there is no effect on me so far. However, this is one of the major reasons that I am anti-SC methodology. They do more harm then good- continously.

Why would your venues have a problem with SC if the advantage to be legal would be in the venues best interest? If the venue is using a kj with discs then what is the problem? Sounds like the venues have recieved bad info. In my market where SC and CB have both filed suits, venues have used that info for their atvantage.

Despite all of that I have more work than I can handle and sometimes I have to hand of gigs to other hosts, I still count my friends, since I have known them many years. We all help each other out, this is a hard concept for some hosts to accept. Things have changed in the industry and not all for the best. Lonman you think my idea of advertising a struggling show is far fetched, I have seen it work with some venues, once they promoted the karaoke more aggressively it was successful. Sometimes you can over do the promotion and have so many singers show up they don't have a good time and never come back to the show. The magic number at least for me seems to be over 22 singers, once that happens then they get on the cell phones and start looking for another place.

22 singers is an avg singing crowd for our show. Often get more than that, sometimes less. Had 23 last night. Again, if you feel you are THAT good, then no you don't need to do any advertising which is great. I only WISH I could be THAT good. :roll:Auto detailing business cards

Yeah and it was locking up my machine too. Had to block it on this one as well.

He's done that about three times and all in response to C. Staley in different threads in the last few days. Funny -- it seems to be aimed at the one person who couldn't give a rat's hiney.

He's actually been doing that pretty much ever since he showed up here.
He has yet to put up or shut up.
Credibility, anyone?

As stated above- no waves. They see no advantage, ESPECIALLY in a market where SC ( and only SC) is causing problems. I don't neccesarily agree with them, but as a former bar owner, I certainly understand the thought process behind it.

BTW- An update on the pirate for whom this thread was started: She has added 2 more venues since being named by SC. She now has 3 shows on Thursdays and also on Fridays- all different. Awesome...

I should mention that this KJ is outside my work radius, and is not a competitor in the practical sense. She's just close enough to keep tabs on and for my colleagues to talk about. Fun to watch, though....

I've only done it twice, not three times.

First here: viewtopic.php?f=26&t=22169&p=310123&hilit=+anticipated#p310123

Second here: viewtopic.php?f=26&t=21988&p=310215#p310215

This was in response to someone who chose not to educate themselves on the facts regarding this discounted price apparently because they don't give a rats whatever. If c. staley would have taken the time to educate himself & read the GEM Advertisement that was sent via KS email, c. staley would have seen that the price reduction is temporary through September 16th 2011 & only available with the coupon code that came with the advert. The GEM is still the same price on the SC website. So let's see what the price will be on September 17th 2011, shall we? Will it be the same? Will it be cheaper? Will it cost more!!!?????

BTW, this GEM advert is the first advertisement ever emailed to me through Karaoke Scene email. Have any of you old timers seen any other ads for various karaoke products in the past emailed to you?

What exactly is it that you think we're selling, Wall? Pictures of discs?

Hey Cue -- did you get your discs that you bought? Are they real? Diafel -- weigh in when you get yours, okay?

Got my "pictures" today. They have now become "imaginary" since entering my possession.

Another update. This one isn't on the pirate named in the OP, but in regard to another KJ and venue I mentioned that was named in NY, just over the state line. I repeat that this host and venue's legitimacy status is unknown to me. They might be 1:1 or they may not. I don't know them.

Since being named ( I can't remember the host's name, but the venue was Backstreets), they stopped karaoke for a week or two, then the venue and the same host(s) have resumed business. The information given me ( friend of owner, and seconded by friend of fill-in host) is that they have been advised that the suit is "frivolous".

We'll see what the next step on either side is.

Maybe that's why SC hasn't come to Texas yet!

Update: Now speaking from First-hand knowledge, Not a single KJ in my area- including the definite pirate that I mentioned- has been affected in any way at all ( shutdowns or rate increases) since the sweep 3 months ago.

While I do not negate the experience of the Floridians, here in NJ it has been treated as what it is- frivolous litigation- as per my earlier prediction. In my area, litagation is an everyday occurrence. If the case isn't exceptionally strong ( and SC's is exceptionally weak) it's treated as the non-issue it is. People here are used to this sort of thing, and aren't going to be terrified by letters.

Now, that's the KJs. The venues might. However, if they are, and NJ KJs lose work because of it, the fun will truly start... Very rare for NJ folk to do a "ah... nevermind...".

Well, don't know how or why what happened happened, but the known pirate in our town has been banned from a couple places due to their illegal song library. Auto detailing business cards

"Karaoke Miami failed to appear, answer, or otherwise respond to the Complaint filed on
April 2, 2010 [ECF No. 1], despite having been served. (See Certificate of Service [ECF No. 21]).
A Clerk’s Default was entered against several Defendants, including Karaoke Miami, on February
7, 2011. (See [ECF No. 43]). On July 8, 2011, the portion of the action relating to Karaoke Miami,
the sole remaining Defendant with operations in the Southern District of Florida, was transferred to
this Court. (See [ECF Nos. 65, 69)]. The Court has carefully considered the Motion, the record, and
the applicable law."

Guess we will have to wait & see what happens in New Jersey.

Here is what happens in Florida when a KJ ignores those "letters".
