Seems like age hit the man “Like A Hurricane”.
“Old Man” look at me now, I’m a lot like you.
It’s because of “The Needle & The Damage Done”

His age notwithstanding (69), Neil Young has a “Heart of Gold”.

Streaming music services such as Spotify have eclipsed CD sales and are closing in on digital downloads as the largest source of revenue in the music industry's biggest market, according to new data from the Recording Industry Association of America.

US revenues from subscription streaming brands such as Spotify and Rhapsody and streaming radio services including SiriusXM hit $1.87bn in the US in 2014, a 29 per cent increase on 2013 and equivalent to 27 per cent of total music industry revenues.

Sales of CDs slipped 12.7 per cent to $1.85bn, even as the decline in total sales of physical formats was cushioned by the renaissance of vinyl records, which accelerated in 2014, with a near 50 per cent jump in sales of LPs to $315m.

Now i don't know what format new SC production will be, or going forward, what any karaoke manufacturer will do, but it sounds like it would be insane to dump money into a dead technology.

It will be interesting to see if the karaoke industry can survive these changes. Maybe we'll be to a point where singers will bring their own songs in on a device and just plug into the kj or house sound system and sing that way.

Sources?

I am authoring a letter of frustration, re: US laws & the absence of a "Music Rights Department," here, vs. every other civilized country in the world, & the fact that those of us at the consumer (KJ) level, who are trying desperately to work within the lines, are sent in many different directions by companies, who make it to press & retailers/wholesale outlets, claiming to be legit, but almost all of whom have been sued for illegitimacy... The recipients of this letter will include: Consumer Protection Agency, my Congressman, & music publishers such as Universal, EMI, among others - I think it would be pertinent to show that downloads, even from the UK & France, would benefit their revenue stream...

Music is the cost of doing business for us (and a write off as well). We don't let the singers pay for any of the tracks we buy though some tip the respective hosts. It is one of the ways we differentiate ourselves from all the rest of the hosting companies out there.

I don't let customers pay for their songs either. If I don't have a song that they want and it's available, I tell them that I'll have it for next week. They are happy with that. I don't need to get it on the spot and I don't want to be hooked up to the internet.

I don't feel the need to satisfy the "me, me, me..... I need it now" for anyone. If they can't wait until next week they need to find somewhere else to sing. I have never gone online with my computer during a show in al the years I have been doing this. Why invite trouble?

I am still flawless in the fact that I have never had a single glitch of any kind in over three years. I think that my singers and listeners appreciate the "flawless" aspect more, than their needing their song "right now". I too never ask for them to pay for song. Yesterday I purchased a song from SBI called "Angelina" by Louis Prima and the guy was extremely happy when I told him that I had it...... so happy he bought me a drink!

I added 4 tracks on Tuesday for a private show. (2 Maroon 5, 1 Ke$ha, 1 Luke Bryan)

I added 1 track last night for my regular Wednesday night gig. (Johnny Paycheck)

I use a second computer to access Icroons and purchase download tracks at the show.
I also use that second computer to update Twitter and FaceBook live, during the show.

The only reason that I don't perform those functions with my "show" computer is concern for stability. I also don't want any surprise updates during the show.

I download to a usb drive and then update the show computer with the new tracks in CompuHost, takes about 30 seconds, and the singer is creating "karaoke history" with a song performed for the first time.

I've never received anything but gratitude and praise when providing this service. (and tips and drinks and affection  )

I used to do that as well. Often times the requestor (usually first timers) never came back because I didn't have their song and wanted to sing it tonight. Now I get it when they ask & several have become regulars because of it.
My karaoke computer isn't connected to the internet (only connects to internet to update software), my dj computer is the main internet connection. I download on that one, then just flash drive it over to the karaoke. Process takes all but about 10 seconds once the download is finished. Plus it's nice to have Google up and running when you get those that give you a lyric of a song but can't remember anything else. PLUS it's doubly nice to have an immediate backup if something should happen to the karaoke computer just face into the dj music. I probably bought close to 15 new songs by requests last week alone.

I added 18 tracks.......last night (not a usual Wednesday). This was for 3 different venues.
The most for a single night is 41. On a Saturday night when we ran 8 simultaneous shows.
We do 80-100 tracks a month.
We do ~110 shows a month.

my hosting computer is online. i am careful as to where i go, aside from i-croons and the online song stores, i only go to wikipedia (for info like release date and genre for songs as i add them to SongbookDB) and google/AZlyrics for that "do you have that songs that goes..." question. 8 years so far and not a single hickup. i have updates turned off for everything, if it ain't broke...

My hosting computer is offline. My second laptop is online at all times to download requested tracks; on the fly & that song is ready within 15 min or the next round whichever comes first.

2nd laptop also for filler tunes in between karaoke songs (assigned to a separate mixer channel). Hosting pc crashed? No problem. 2nd pc is hosting ready. Swap with a/b switcher, switching is accomplished with very minimum lapse of time.

I really should put my hosting software on my dj computer for backup just in case. Otherwise I have the exact same setup!

I take an identical back-up laptop with me to every show and I have yet to ever take it out of my car. My show laptop is 8 years old running XP Pro 32bit and has never let me down. It never goes online and the only update it gets is Karma, and I DL that onto a thumb drive from another computer. If I decide to someday DL during my show I will use another laptop too. :banger:

My show computer is a little 11 inch Acer netbook. It does the job, great.
