Although I have not done regular karaoke shows in three years, I agreed to do one hour (out of four) on Saturday during my DJ gig and a two hour Thursday night show at a resort that I have for the summer. We do Monday, Wednesday Saturday 4 hour DJ gig and 2 hour trivia on Tuesday night and 2 hour karaoke on Thursday night, so it was worth it to me. One of my contractors does the Tue/Thu deal but she is on vacation this week so I stepped in to cover the Thursday karaoke.

So this old guy about 70 comes up and starts looking at my equipment (my dj equipment) and says what brand of tracks do you have? He says his name is Bill and he has a karaoke business in Tennessee. He says he has ONLY Sound Choice and Chartbuster, and I tell him I have neither but I do have a good selection of All Star, DK and several others. He says, well I should have brought my hard drive with me and let you copy it. I said Bill, I wouldn't do that, it's illegal. He says what do you mean? I said, you can't just copy somebody's hard drive, you have to pay for your music.

He looks at me like I'm an alien and said, "I have never heard of a KJ buying karaoke music, up in Tennessee, we all just copy each other's drives, nobody BUYS karaoke." I said Bill, that's illegal, you can't do that. He then professes to be "a good friend" of the Stovalls and said they never had a problem with people doing that. (Wait, birds of a feather) but anyway, I think this short encounter was very telling of what goes on out there in the real world. How could a 70 year old man not know that was not the right thing to do? It's like the folks that have several generations of their family on welfare and none of them know anybody that has ever had a job, this guy doesn't know anybody that pays for their music.
