Caught another KJ's show last Sunday. This particular multi-rigger used to own a B&M karaoke store, and supplied numerous hosts with discs and equipment. I'm pretty certain that he is legit.
That being said, one of his KJs was running this show....
Equipment: Lappy, Pyle VHF wireless mic, and a SINGLE TEN INCH POWERED SPEAKER.
I mean, how do you, or I should say: Why would you bother even trying to mix sound with that.
The kj was a young lady who was clueless. If asked about a particular version, she could read the abbreviations on her lappy but had no idea what they meant.
Completely untrained. I did think that she has a great personality for the job, but sorely in need of training.
That happened to be the last show at that venue for her, as it was fairly dead.
You just KNOW if approached, that venue will be soured on karaoke for quite awhile.
Pirates suck, but crappy-oke probably does even more damage.
A single ten incher???!! Really?!?!

Oh no doubt crappioke is a business killer. But it's 'usually' a higher percentage that pirates run crappioke. I did know a couple of pirates that ran very good shows but they were also harming because they didn't buy their music, they didn't charge much to the bar souring it for legit players that do invest a lot that tend to charge a more realistic fee.

A single qsck10 could fill a small venue pretty nicely.

I have a bunch of know-it-alls over the years tell me I have no idea what I'm doing with karaoke because I use a DJ mixer. I love being able to tell them that it's a high-end DJ mixer and I have a good mic preamp handling the vocals, which is a better combination than most typical karaoke live sound mixers.

That's great, but with all the sound coming only from a single ten inch speaker, the mixer would be virtually negated.
Paradigm: Nah, it was on my night off, not a competitor. Also, like I said, it was their last show-they failed. They also soured the venue....

If I was only being paid $50-75 a night in a small venue, first off, I'd never take the gig, but IF I DID, I might show up with a single powered 12" or 15". If they aren't doing the job they are being paid to do, it'll catch up to them. If they work there for three years and are successful with a single powered 10", more power to them!
