Yep and that includes all laws and the policies of vendors from Coca Cola to Microsoft.

8) The difference is tim the really large companies like the one's run by the Coke brothers can influence elections and laws effecting their business interests. Now that the Supreme Court has decided that corporations can give unlimited amounts of money as well as wealthy individuals it threatens to adversely effect our whole Democratic process. They can give money to both sides and have legislation crafted to protect and promote their business interests, not always for the benefit of the country as a whole.

That has nothing to do with what he actually wrote. What he said was running a REAL business means being a legit businessman. Filing taxes, paying fees and acting like an actual adult. Size has nothing to do with being a legit business. It's no different than your local mom & pop hardware store, plumber or sandwich shop. Unfortunately, it seems that many KJ's are fly-by-night, bottom feeding scum who work under the table/cash only, steal their music, do no advertising and invest nothing back into their business to improve it. It's just a crappy little hobby to make an extra $50 on the weekend and they treat it as such. Sad, because if they actually DID treat it like the real business it is, they would see their income triple or more. But that takes effort and the ability to actually think, traits that many KJ's don't have it seems.

Name me one company that started out as a multinational conglomerate. They all started out as mom and pops, single proprietorship, or partnership of some kind. To get to be multinational takes a lot of work and a lot of money.

I don't worry much about what LR says when he is trying to rationalize things.

8) Actually Bazza it has everything to do with it. If you are so big that you can have Congress pass laws that give you unfair advantage over your competition, then it does matter. I don't feel it's very adult to have the rules of a game changed so you will win all the time. I was under the impression the use of negative terms to describe other hosts even in a general manner was not to be tolerated on this forum? It's nice to know that you feel many KJ's can't even think for themselves, is that why they have to have manus do the thinking for them?

8) That's ok tim I don't put much stock in you wanting to place all your trust in large multinational corporations, whose only loyalties is to their owners, and stock holders. Their only goal is to maximize their profits at the expense of everyone else.

I'm going to say the majority of bar owners I've done karaoke for have no idea that there are different brands of karaoke songs, much less a web site where they could find a km who was "certified" by a single manufacturer. Sometimes belief and reality has to be suspended to read this forum.

I don't want to discount the circumstances anyone has in their particular geography, but Rick's comment holds true for my area. In fact, it holds true not just for the venue owners, but the singers as well. They don't know and they don't care.

I don't put manufacturer ID's in my books. But I do have people looking at my KJ screen most nights I host where they do see disc ID's. Almost weekly, I will have someone ask me "How do you know which one to choose?" or "What does that code mean?" (in reference to the DiscID column in Karma).

I refined my explanation to the following -

All of the DiscID's are different cover bands. Some are better than others.
While your's and Rick area may differ from mine. I do get request for specific brands. I am not sure why????? We have been getting an influx of people from the NE and Florida and perhaps they have become accustom to a specific brand/version and the primary brand they ask for or say "is that (fill in the brand of choice)?" And the two most requested brand are SC and CB. My online songbook also list the Brand code and I do get ask about the codes.

Just because you never experienced that, doesn't mean it never happens.
Yes, that is true Cue. But, I do live an area that was one of the hardest hit by lawsuits, so I bet my statement holds truer for most hosts than not.
My are has been hit hard several times with suits by both SC and CB and now PRLLC and some still ongoing today and the bar community is very aware of the actions but none I have encountered has ever ask or implyed that I not play a specific brand. ????????

There are many kjs that cant think for themselves just as there are many other business operators in other industries that mimic the competition and continue to make the same mistakes over and over again all the while blaming their own failures on their competition. Several years ago when I decided to quit my (well paid) full time job in corporate america and pursue my DJ/KJ business, lots of people commented behind my back and even to my face that I would not survive or be able to provide for my family and have a good quality lifestyle. That would have probably happened (failure or just marginal success)if I did not think for myself and just did what all the others in my market were doing (just getting by). I stepped out of the box with my eyes and ears wide open and created my own path to success. I spend less time on the things that might pull me down and more on the things that will help me move forward. It is not because I carry a specific brand or not that makes my success. The brands are just one tool of many that when combined along with my personal drive have help steer the path of my business. Maybe it's time to stop blaming the manus or your competition for the problems in your area. I deal everyday with the cut throats and pirates (using a hard drive bought on craigslist). I have spent my time creating a brand for myself that others choose to do business with and it becomes a win win for all parties. All you guys and gals have a great day.

8) I didn't think I was blaming anyone for anything. I achieved all I wanted to accomplish as far as karaoke hosting and running a successful business was concerned, I climbed my mountain and planted the flag.

Well Said.

I often hear people talking about karaoke as I am setting up a show or doing maintenance at a venue. Invariably it is looked down upon and people think those involved with it are somehow lesser people.

I just smile to myself and do a little silent judging of my own. I am probably doing better than most of the folks making their snide comments.

I am happier now than I was in my last 6 years at Microsoft and I will be back at that income level by end of year. Yet I have a LOT more free time, less stress, and I am my own boss.

In an industry where unprofessional conduct is pervasive, one who conducts himself or herself in a professional manner is likely to thrive by default.
