That is easy to do if you know for sure what side is going to win. During times of civil war noble families protected their vast estates and wealth
by having one son fighting on each side. That way no matter who won the family would continue and secure their wealth. Not everyone likes to gamble, by using this example it would be like betting the pass line and the don't pass line at the same time.
