Now I guess what came to my mind is yes this passage is talking about non-commercial use of regular cds, but I don't understand the legal objections of SOME of the karaoke manufacturers to format shifting if it actually is done on a 1:1 basis... Isn't that much the same thing that the RIAA is talking about here?

I can only speak for SC, but SC's position has been, for quite some time now, that if you demonstrate through an audit of your system that you are in 1:1 correspondence, you will be given permission to operate commercially from media-shifted copies. Operators who wait to prove 1:1 correspondence until they get sued are still given the opportunity to do so and obtain a dismissal.

In other words, it's the only way they've figured out how to catch KJs with illegal files. I have yet to see any non-KJs have legal action filed against them. The bulk of piracy is home users but nobody interested in going after hard drive sellers or torrent sites. The revenue stream is squeezing the KJs and venues. Yet several karaoke producers are continuing to release new music, not pursuing a lawsuit strategy and doing just fine. Go figure.

I was actually thinking more about a certain other company (that is now doing business under a different name for various and sundry legal reasons which i will not touch upon here) who expressed strong reservations about KJ's being allowed to format shift a custom disc purchased from them. (My wife likes to take a disc to other people's shows to sing when we aren't playing a show somewhere)

OK, I have under 40- call it 35. If I were PC based, what would my audit cost? If $150, it would come out to $4.29 each- still to high. This question has come up before without a definite answer. I am supplying a specific number of discs- 35. What would SC charge a PC based host for that audit?
