Is Stellar seriously expecting people to pay $3200 for a certificate without giving you a complete set of discs? From their website it looks like I'm supposed to "buy" pirated copies of the stuff before 2007 and then pay them an additional $3200 on top of that for their certificate. And then I'm supposed to take up the fact that the pirate screwed me with the pirate? WOW.

So how much did you pay the pirate before you forked over extra dough to Stellar? I wouldn't mind paying that if I got a set of discs like the gem series, but for a printed certificate? I guess they won't be in my library.

Bgood,
I think the assumption Stellar is going on is if you are buying the certificate you have already bought the pirate drive or downloaded the tracks from a download site. Just read it carefully as the certificates only cover discs upto 2007 and some are not covered...at least I think that is what I remember from reading the page.

@kjathena - That is correct. The CAP certificates cover the Stellar library up to 2007. If you do a CAP with them they give a discount on the 2007 and later portion of the library. They can provide discs with the MP3+G files (just drag and drop) up to current date. Then a subscription if you wish to get monthly updates.

@bgood - I paid about $3000 for the entire system. What I received was the VocoPro 8800 Club system with a laptop, external drive, some extra mics and cables, and about 50 physical CD's (promised over 500).

It was definitely a lesson learned on my part.

If SC loses the Music Express Declaritory case, anyone who paid will have done so for nothing...

I don't believe this to be accurate.

There is a difference between media-shifting something you already own and buying a hardrive or downloading tracks that you don't own.

I have not read the information on the ExpressWay suit, but I can't imagine that even if it goes against Sound Choice that it opens the door for us to download Sound Choice tracks without paying for them. I believe it would simply start clearing up the issue of whether we can media-shift what we do own without fear of being sued.

More Info -

In the case of a CAP agreement, you are able to cover yourself regardless of how you obtained the Stellar tracks. In fact, with the CAP agreement, you don't have to have any physical discs at all. Download the Stellar library, get a CAP, and now you have in essence paid $3200 for their entire library which you get to use forever (there are conditions but they are easy enough to abide by).

Sound Choice requires you to either get an audit to verify 1-1 against your physical library or purchase the GEM series which is only licensed and have to be re-verified annually. Either way, you have to own their original disc based product or license the GEM series. SC's covenant does not cover the use of any SC tracks that you don't own or haven't licensed. You have to have legally obtained the product before working out a media-shifting arrangement with SC.
