We once had a show at a new venue where the owner believed she was paying her fees through the jukebox. I brought her in alot of info to show her it didn't count for her live music and tried to get her on board but her live band people were telling her that BMI was just a shakedown organization and she should ignore them. Plus her son had done a college paper that led him to believe that it was all a scam and the artists weren't getting paid, etc.
So it was uphill but we almost had her convinced when she started getting calls every day from a number in Tennessee. The caller kept saying they were coming on vacation and asking about her karaoke. She reverse-checked the number and it was BMI. That really made her angry. If they had been up front, she would have negotiated with them but now she felt that they were lying connivers and their trickery had only reinforced what others were telling her. She finally did agree to have them send her a contract but went out of business shortly thereafter. But they aren't someone you should ignore, regardless. Just search Justia or RFC Express for them and you will see them filing suits against bars on an almost daily basis.
