YouTube is a double edged sword.
There are also bands covering songs with no permission as well. As a matter of fact, In December 2007, Journey hired Filipino singer Arnel Pineda of the cover band The Zoo after Neal Schon saw him on YouTube singing covers of Journey songs.

It seems we're all being led down the garden path over this whole issue of performing karaoke songs. We can only perform in our homes but no one is allowed to hear it as this could be deemed as being a public performance.
Even on this site there's a singers showcase. Isn't that illegal?
Those singers have to get written permission to perform.
Copyright has been breached. Unless we get written permission as to how we use each and every individual song.
I think its time that better laws were in place to protect people that use karaoke for non profit like say on Youtube so we aren't always having to worry about having our material removed or to be subject to legal disputes.
Youtube have changed their policy a little in that now copyright holders have to make a claim on each performance listed but Youtube can still remove accounts if there are multiple breach claims.
So we still have no protection under the law either way.
