Types of Mixers

There are basically 2 basic types. Analog Mixers and Digital Mixers. An analog mixer is comprised of analog signal paths and does not convert the audio to digital data. A digital mixer accepts both digital and analog sources. It converts analog waveforms to digital data as soon as it enters the mixer, and usually has effects and processors that can affect the data digitally before it converts the data back to analog waveforms on the way out. What's "Best?" Oh I knew you would ask. Short answer: Both.

You forgot the other two types; powered and unpowered.

One should also consider whether or not the mixer has phantom power available...  important for use with some equipment!

Have you talked to your local music store?   The ones that sell PA systems and guitars and have experienced musicans hanging around?   You will want a nice total PA system.     Mixer, mircophones, speakers, cables, amplifier, etc.    Don't skimp on the outlay.    Get the best you can afford.    Do it right the first time and you won't waste a lot of money.   Listen to what they have to say.  Have them explain why you need the stuff they are talking about.    If you can, go to several stores before you buy.
