I'm new in karaoke world, I'm using .kar midi files for playing on my computer, but the sound from my on-board soundcard is terrible. I'm using Van Basco karaoke player. Can someone suggest me which software synth to try/buy/install on my laptop (and where to find it) to improve sound quality?

in my experience XG is the best. Its some years since I used midi and back then you could get an xg daughter board that clipped onto the top of a cheap soundcard giving it the quality of a high end card. Sadly soundcards have changed and the daughterboard doesnt clip on the modern ones...so I guess I am no help
