Post subject:  Vocal Remover Software
I want to remover vocals from a CD I have.  The song is not available anywhere I've looked in a karaoke format.  

Any advise would be very appreicated.

first off when you rip the cd to your computer rip as a wave file rather than mp3 as this compresses and makes the attempt at devocalisation less effective.
there are many devocalisers on the web just do a google search :)

no, it's not legal to do this. Karaoke songs are licensed for the sync rights for the lyrics, and the copyright. By devocalizing a song and using it in a commercial enviornment, you're violating both situations. (the copyright one ONLY if you never make the lyrics available onscreen)

what the hell is up with the colours???anyway I think pinkbumblebee is only using for home use Matt, she has stressed this several time in other posts

Thanks for the suggestions. I don't want to do anything illegal, thats why I asked.  And also I will only be at h ome for karaoke, but still I'm not one to break the law in anyway for my own gain.

for home use, it's totally okay. That is covered by the Fair Use Act. Basically, if you buy it, you can do with it what you will... It's still not what they call "legal". It's still against the copyright act to copy/convert the stuff for your home use (not anybody else's home use! LOL!)... it's just what is defined as an unprosecutable offense. The Home Act defines exactly what that is for well... HOME useage!

I have the software from MTU and honestly, don't waste your money.  Not that it is a bad program, in fact as far as vocal removers go it's pretty good.  The problem lies in the way CDs are made.  Vocal removing software basically pulls everything from the center channel which is where vocals are usually placed.  there is a little bleed over to the left and right, however.  The guitars, drums etc are placed in left and right channels, but again there is some bleed over to the center.  The result when you take out the center is a very shallow sound musically and you will still hear the vocals in the left and right.  It will be soft, almost like backing vocals, but it is there and very noticable.  If you still want to remove the vocals from your CDs i'd suggest going online to a place like download.com to get a free version or a try-it-free version of something before spending money.  This way you will be able to tell if you are happy with the results before you lay out cash.

Try with the free program first; they all work on the same principle. Whatever program you use, free or not will not give you the good result. Most new songs will have effect in the vocal that will produce a strange haunting sound. Not all songs can be devox. with good result. Midi file may sound better than some of those devox tracks.

I might add, that if the singer used reverb, echo, or heavy compresson, or a number of other effects, it makes it all but impossible to remove the vocals. I have actually gotten the vocals removed the best i could, ran it through my studio, removed some of the bass,  made the music louder, and rewrote the song. It made it useable, but still not perfect. I think DK disc with that stupid  guide melody going on is at times very distracting. I have gotten rid of that annoying melody instrument on the DK disc with the MTU remover, and made them a good disc.

The latest version of Vogone supposably can be adjusted to find where the vocals are on the track and reduce them better than any software out there now.

True, Danny, but I have the latest and it's still not what I consider good enough.  I am sort of a perfectinist when it comes to things like this, though and there will probably never be a program that will do what  I want!

I have a different but related problem.  Multiplex mp3+g files.  

I have found a ripper that will remove the vocal track for any new music, but I have over three thousand mp3+g files that need the vocals removed. I know, that's what the multiplex button is for, but I sometimes forget to hit the button before the song starts.

Can anybody suggest any software to do this in a timely fashion?  :)

I'VE TRIED EVERY VOCAL REMOVER PROGRAM AVAILABLE, AND BY FAR THE BEST RESULTS I'VE HAD IS WITH ADOBE AUDITION V1.5 OR 2.0.  MTU IS GOOD, BUT AUDITON IS BETTER.

SONGS BEFORE 1962 YOU CAN FORGET, AS THEY WERE RECORED IN MONO AND YOU NEED A STEREO TRACK, WITH LITTLE OR NO ECHO OR REVERB TO REDUCE THE VOCAL.  THE VOCAL MUST HAVE ALSO BEEN CENTER PANNED.

ONCE YOUR VOCAL REDUCTION TRACK HAS BEEN SAVED, YOU CAN FURTHER PROCESS IT WITH SOUNDSOAP 2 PROGRAM BY "BIAS SOFTWARE".  RUNS ONLY ON XP OPERATING SYSTEM.

WHEN REDUCING A VOCAL, HIGHLIGHT IN THE TRACK ONLY THE VOCAL SECTIONS, DO THE VOCAL REDUCTION AND THEN AMPLIFY THE VOCAL CUT SECTION BY AND + 3dB.  DO NOT VOCAL CUT THE INTRO, INTERLUDE OR ENDING MUSIC.  WILL GIVE YOU A CLEANER SOUNDING TRACK.

VERY SIMPLE, IMPORT THE MULTIPLEX MP3, INTO A PROGRAM LIKE ADOBE AUDITION, THE RIGHT CHANNEL WILL NORMALLY CONTAIN THE VOCAL AND THE LEFT CHANNEL THE INSTRUMENTAL.  CUT THE RIGHT CHANNEL, THEN COPY AND PASTE THE LEFT CHANNEL TO THE RIGHT CHANNEL.  NOW YOU WILL HAVE THE RIGHT AND LEFT ALL INSTRUMENTAL.  SAVE THE NEW TRACK.  ADDITIONALLY, FIND THE WIDEN THE STEREO EFFECTS IN THE PROGRAM AND APPLY, WILL MADE THE NEW INSTRUMENTAL
SOUND MORE LIKE A STEREO VS MONO TRACK.

IF USING IN A CDG, GIVE THE NEW MP3 THE SAME NAME AS THE CDG.

To not spend any money (it's legally free) try downloading Audacity and install it and then try this with stereo recordings:

1) import your stereo file
2) Open the track menu (the arrow next to the track title) and choose "split stereo track"
3) Select the lower track (the right channel) by clicking the area around the mute/solo buttons
4) Choose "invert" from the effects menu
5) Using the track menus, change each track to mono
6) Press the play button to hear your result - on some the voice will be gone and most of the other instruments will be unaffected - on others the voice will be greatly reduced - on some it doesn't work

I've tried this on about a dozen songs, on several the voice was eliminated, on several the voice was greatly reduced, but on the majority it didn't work or the music sounded terrible when finished

Its my understanding that this is how many of the vocal eliminators work.
