I am an amateur, and use equipment at home and currently use an Audio Technica MB 3000, prior to getting it I had only used really cheap mics.
I have no complaints about the MB, but it is a budget mic, and I wonder if it would be worth getting something a bit more up-market.
I can see two possiilities, part of me says, "If it ain't broke"
Another part of me says, "Collect a few mics, they will have different characteristics"
Any thoughts?

The mic is just one part of the audio chain; a very important part. If your mic is the weakest link then go ahead and up grade.

Jian is right regarding the mic could be the weakest link in your set up. I started recording with a really crappy mic I'd bought at Radio Shack that was supposedly made by Shure to equal an SM58 but it didn't. I have several different type of recording mics now as well as many different live performance mics and my absolute fav mic to record with is my trusty real Shure SM58. Even though it's built for live performing it's durable and has a clean sound, it's been dropped a million times and the ball is dented in like 4 places but it sounds just as good as the day I first plugged it in. If you're looking for condenser mics Samson makes some damn good ones for the price but they need a +48v Phantom Power, some mixers have this built in, you'd have to check your specs on your mixer if you're using one. If you're gonna gradually upgrade your equipment, as many or most do, you'd like to spend as little doing so as possible.  Sure if you had the dough you'd go first class right off the bat, but somethings make a large difference and won't kill most budgets.

Shure 58s are the most widely accepted work horse of the music industry.

They're fiercely indestructable and at under a $100 shipped, reasonable to all but the lowest of budgets.  Why buy mics twice?  Of all the equipment, a good mic will better your sound with the least amount of additional investment.

What does the rest of your system consist of?

The rest of my current system is a Mackie DFX-6 (upgraded from a Kawai mixer 6 months ago.) Alesis NanoVerb for additional realtime effects. Alesis DM-4. Gemini Pro CD player if I'm recording "live in studio." I used to have a lot more equipment but I've drastically downsized in the past year. My sound card is the SoundBlaster Audigy 2 ZS.
