I have a Karoke set-up that I'm planning to store in a 10ft trailer for the summer in high desert temperatures in Arizona. Highs average in the 110's with lows in the 90's. Temperatures have been as high as 120's, but not for any length of time. Heat season is May thru Sept, with peak in July,August. There seems to be two schools of thought about this, heat will destroy our speakers, Karaoke player, mikes, amps, synth's, etc. Or, "they store airplanes out here, how much more sensitive can music equipment be"? Anyway, I have a job with the forest service, so it's hard to take it with me. not to mention costly and being hauled all over too. Thanks for any info.

A trailer there can turn into an oven I sure wouldnt leave cd's in it. The rest should be fine unless it gets way way hot We have actually run outside in 100+ weather in direct sunlight. My real concern would be wrapping the units in plastic to keep the dust out in case a sandstorm hit... Although ive been there with all kinds of stuff somebody down there might have a better answer... In case you are wondering what a sailor was was doing there I got 2 years shore duty at White Sands Missile Range

I wouldn't want to RUN my system for any length of time in such conditions, but I know that especially amps and speaker drivers reach heat much higher than this (I have heard between 160-180 degrees) and are designed to handle such temps, so I don't think storing them at this temp is going to do anything to them. Like karyoker said, I wouldn't keep your CDs in there, as when it comes down to it, the foil of a CD is secured by some sort of adhesive, and I have seen the foil of CDRs separate from the plastic in my car in the FL heat, so I wouldn't trust my CDG collection to that, even if they are certainly higher quality than CDRs. For the rest of the equipment, I would maybe look into investing in one of those insulated rack bags companies like Gator makes to put your amp/mixer/player rack(s) into. That'll keep them a good 10-20 degrees cooler than the external temp.

What's important to know is the difference between the operating temperature and non-operating temperature. I don't know what equipment you have but to give you an example, a typical rackmount PC is recommended to operate between 0 - 50 degrees C at about 20-80% humidity. That's about 32-120 degrees F. Anything beyond that, the manufacturer will not guarantee proper operation. Some systems will only work up to 40 degrees C, which is about 104 F. Non-operating temperature is typically around -40 to 65 degrees C, which is about -40 to 150 F. Once you store items at that temperature, you need to bring it to operating temeperature slowly or you may form condensation inside which can blow up your equipment. So, yes you can leave you equipment out there in the heat but not to operate. If you continue to use it at high temperature, what will happen is the system may slowly degrade over time (mostly the IC or chips inside the equipment) and/or it may just shut down due to high heat. I would not recommend using it at that temperature for any amount of time. Use a fan if you can. Don't use any moisture to cool down since it may short circuit the equipment. Putting the equipment under a shade will bring down the temperature up to 10 degrees. Using a fan may bring it down another 10. I would be safe and do whatever I can do cool down the equipment.
