Experiment with different mics whether cheap or not..  Then learn mic tecniques . For lows the mic is held close. For highs it is pulled away or tilted.  Lisp for example is reduced by holding the mic above the mouth and tilted down..

Also this is a case for a stage monitor that is heavy on the vocal with no FX and learn how to use it for improving.. Also recording helps with vocal tecniques for you hear what it exactly sounds like.

I don't think the problem is your equipment but rather the way you sing.  Here's a simple test.  Hold you nose closed and sing, loudly.  If there is a noticable difference in your sound other than the muting of certain sounds such as the "n" sound.  You're singing through your nose.  Don't do that.  Get a swimmer's nose clamp at a sporting goods store practice singing with that in place.  It will hurt at first but your sound will be greatly improved in the end.

I, too, think it's the way you're singing. I've seen people get that "trained" out of them.

Some times, it's even a medical condition, the nasal passage is very narrow. Is your speaking voice the same? If not, it's most likely the way you're singing... as exweed is saying.

Or heck, just sing the really old bluegrass songs.... the old bluegrass singers were  known for that:)

Although it probably is the way you sing, it may also be the shape of your nose and nasal passages.  Many singers won't get nose jobs for just this reason.

Experinment with the advice given above, including singing close and across the top of the mic ( mic near bottom lip ).  Also, CHANGE THAT MIC!   For instance RSQ P series mics make EVERYONE sound like that...

LOL

I have a bit of the problem, as well.  All I did was practice singing while consciously letting the air come from my nose.

I'm sure I still have a bit of it, but I know it's improved a lot.

blow your nose before you sing to ensure the nasal passages are clear. A friend of mine also sniffs salt water up her nose
sounds yuk but she has a voice to die for

Actually my doctor also recommended this to clear sinus passages.
Very minor discomfort for a few seconds...well worth it.

Mix table salt and luke warm water (just the same as if you were to gargle with it)
Put a little on a teaspoon and plug one nostril while you sniff it up the other nostril.
Sniff it up your nostril until you feel go through...you will know.
Have kleenex ready!
Do other nostril the same way.

I do too:

   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nasal_irrigation

I can't recommend it highly enough. I also had a septoplasty to correct a deviated septum, which is common with people who have difficulty breathing from their nose. I can now breathe, and it helps my singing immensely. When I couldn't breathe through my nose I had to manage every little breath, now I have some margin for error.

Yep.  This is a tried and true method.  Please do it in private, as you will probably sound terrible at first and it might even give you a headache.  If it hurts; STOP!

Absolutely.

I like the baby syringe method. (I am skeptical of those who say "sniff it".) I put 1/4tsp of baking soda and 1/4tsp of non-iodized salt with very warm water in an 8oz measuring cup and mix well. Then I take one of those bulb baby ear syringes (2-3 bucks at a discount store) and fill it, and tilt my head over sideways and "inject" it in the nose. It should flow out the other side. I do it twice on each side, then gently blow my nose without blocking a nostril.

Another method is:

Why do you say that?
Can't it be possible that there is more than one recommended way to irrigate your sinuses?
This was the way a Medical Doctor instructed me to do it and ya know what?
It works!...just fine, thank you!

hmmm I would kinda think that for a quick fix the baking soda would defeat the purpose...why would you want all that fizzing going on?
from what I understand, sniffing the saline can and should be done just before singing

That's fine. I just have researched it nine ways from Sunday, reading many references, and never heard of it in that way. I believe the first reference was to a  *friend* that sniffed it, and that is second-hand information. That is why I say skeptical.

Show me some kind of reference that describes it that way, and I might become unskeptical. 8-)

What fizzing? It isn't soda water, it is baking soda, which is used to balance the pH of the solution and prevent irritation. Try dissolving some baking soda in water and see how much fizz you get....

Also, with regard to doing it right before singing, I wouldn't. There is often some residual water that takes a while to resolve it's way out of your sinuses. I would recommend waiting a half-hour or so.
