Now that we are dealing with positive aspects of karaoke hosts let me present another aspect.. In the days of tv repair there was a saying  when you walk into a customers home you have 5 seconds to get their confidence in your abililties and your honesty

This is  a public relations and how to deal with regs and new customers. The first  impression is most important. The first slot in rotation is determinened by the host.. This is a subject that has been hammered to death

What are some ideas to give an initial impression to old singers coming into a new bar"?

Try to meet & greet each person.  Go to each table between songs (after you have the next song pulled & ready or cued), mingle.  Bring a book, slips & pen to them directly, introduce yourself as the host & ask them if they would like to sing, then play off whatever answer they give you - even if it's a HELL no!
As for opening slot, it's first come first serve - nothing more nothing less.  Actuall opening slot is always me!  Just to make sure everything is working right & because it's the only song i'll sing in the night (not my job to be the singer   ) unless I get a special request or a duet request from someone who can't find a partner - THEN it's my job to sing.

Start at the advertised time.  If your customers, the singers, have made it a point to be there on time, then it is only fitting that the KJ starts on time.  I have heard too many times  "we only have two singers, we will start when we get more".

Or, if you're me, you shout across the bar "Hey!  Look!  New meat!"  At that point they will either know that they are in the right bar or the wrong one.  If they were in the wrong one they wouldn't have stayed anyway, and if they're in the right one you just made a new customer.

eye contact and a genuine smile that starts at the mouth and reaches the eyes is always a good start

OR:

The bar owners new girlfriend objects to you referring to her and her friends as "new meat" and you just lost a new job   LMAO

Yet that might not matter, after-all, you were in the wrong bar anyway  LMAO

That SHOULD be a gimme!  Regardless of whether you 1, 10 or 100 singers, start at the time you are advertising!  I've had on occasion where it's just 1 singer & me to allow the other more time to pick another song.

In addition to all the great information - Following are 1st impression make or breakers:

KJ's personal Appearance: You don't have to be a model. just neat and clean (always carry some Tic-Tacs for your breathe. SMILE SMILE SMILE look like your having fun and so will everyone else

KJ's equipment appearance:   Is your set up held together with duct tape?  Do you have 2 miles worth of wires  all over the place?  Are you speaker cabinets ripped, dirty with missing grilles?   Is your TV monitor dusty and damaged?

BOOKS!:  Are they clean and complete without missing and ripped pages ?
Do you have enough request slips (so new singers are not signing up on napkins?)
Pencils or Pens?

KJ 101:

I have to echo everything said here- I personally consider myself late if I am not at the bar an hour before show time even tho it only takes 20-30 minutes to set up. That allows me to talk to the owner, BS with the customers, talk while wiring, and make sure I am ready to go (as soon as the jukebox is cut).

I agree with Lon- singing the first song is important to get the sound worked out. I also use that time to make announcements about bar specials, that if you have a request, let me know- if I can't sing it I will find someone to try it- and other general info.

Oh my gosh... WHY have I never in my almost 3 years here, heard anyone else mention that? Yes, yes, yes... I agree.

I've HAD a KJ come up to my table, bend down to whisper something to me about my next song... and my face turns green. Then it's like "yeah, buddy, now I gotta go outside and catch my breath-cause yours is rotten- and I'll have to skip my next song".

Well, maybe not QUITE that drastic, but bad breath can kill ANY kind of relationship- even KJ to singer, if you get close enough. Very unprofessional in my opinion:) It gives you a bad impression of the person right from the start.
