I know at times an amplifier is needed for a run of coax

Is one every need for a run of an RCA line?

If "yes", is it the same kind of amplifier?

a compostie amp and a RF amp do the same things, but in differnt ways.

The REAL question is...
Do you really need and amplifier in the first place?

More than likely the answer is NO.  With quality cable, connectors, and splitters, you should almost NEVER need an amplifer.  Most people think and amp will get rid of the problems, but  most times the problems are from bad cable, connectors, and splitters allowing other singnals to ingress into the cable.  If you amplify that signal, you amplify the noise too.

If you do use an amplifer, put is as close as possible to the source as you can.  The the further away from the source you put it, there will be more noise to amplify too.
