I have a 12" Yamaha Passive Speaker that I would like to use as a monitor.
What type of POWER do you need to put to a singers monitor???
I was thinking of buying a small 80w power amp to hook into my system ?

This way it would cost me about $90 versus $250 for a powered monitor?

What are you using?

I run 2 8 ohm Peavey 12" wedges (1 in each front corner of the stage) ran off a bridged CS200 power amp for 220 watts.  They also have their own 31 band eq for feedback control & to tune them up on stage.
You don't need a whole lot of power for the stage, but would recommend the eq.

Jam, do you know the model of your 12" yamaha? I run a 12" Yamaha BR12 as my monitor (which is their most popular line of speaker, so odds are it is what you have), and it is rated at 300 watts program (2002 model). I run it through a Samson Servo 300, which bridges mono at 300 watts. I got this amp on sale for around $160.00, so that isn't too bad to properly drive the speaker.

Watts do not translate directly into volume.  Certainly 400 watts prduce more music power than 200 but not twice as much.  I would think that 80 watts for a monitor amp is plenty.  the singer just needs to be alble to hear the mix clearly.
