Late 60's Marvel Comics were among the most costly at around 25 cents an issue ! I think Spiderman was Marvel ???   I wonder if the comic book collection my folks threw away would be worth anything today.  (Probably as much as the baseball cards that were all thrown out, and half my other stuff)  "High tech" entertainment in those days of course was a 100mw walkie-talkie, hollowed out Hardy Boys volumes to sneak bubble-gum into school ,  and a Mad magazine.  (Pea shooters too of course) !

I managed to keep my parents from throwing out my old baseball cards, although I doubt they're worth much of anything.  A major problem is that unless the cards are in some sort of protective covering, they don't stay in very good condition, and if anybody ever touches them with their bare hands they pick up oils and whatnot and they deteriorate even faster.  I imagine comic books have similar problems.

I have one baseball card in a protective cover that was bought for me as a birthday present as an adult: a Ryne Sandberg rookie card (I think Donruss brand).  Now that he's in the Hall of Fame it might be worth a few bucks.  But I don't think it will put the kids through college.

Spider man was Peter Parker I believe dbk.

Yeah Tom.   People put cards, coins, stamps, and even comic books in protective covering for the reasons you mentioned.   The elements take their toll over time.  Stuff happens... water, humidity, paper gets old and brittle, oils as you stated, hungry silverfish, while "mint condition" isn't always necessary, it's a nice plus !, greatly increases value of most collectibles  :worship:
