Take a Belkin usb wireless dongle an 8" food strainer and some glue and make one..  I am currently running off a friend 1 block away and halfway  hidden by the high rise I live in... It works great.....

Antenna for WHAT Ollie ?  What frequency area ?  If I hook that up to a Ham rig, it'll likely blow the rig  LOL

That's pretty nice. I wanted to get my brother some reception at his apartment, but no one without secured access. Is it possible to move this thing around and possibly pick up some unsecured in the distance? I assume yes. I probably need to make one of these.

Having worked with many parabolic antennas I can tell this isnt highly directional And I suspect it is too deep for a proper focal point.. It still works better than the laptop...  A more efficient and better designed antenna would be this one especilally for a longer range..

I live in a high rise in the se corner on the 8th floor. With this antenna pointing west and against the window Im picking up from a building to the west of the high rise. In  a room that is west of the elevator shafts it picks up 40-50 % thru the walls at maybe 3/4 of a block...

It surprises me how many hotspots are around now  I can go out to the farm and detect a half a dozen but they are too weak to connect..A chap in wellington has an antenna on an old grain elevator and provides wireless to a few. With this antenna I could hook up with him Its about a mile..

All my life Ive played with experiments like this (since the mid fifties)and if the broncos were playing in the super bowl today I could fashion an antenna out of bed springs LMAO

Linux has a wireless assistant that beeps like a gieger counter and the beeps get louder and higher in pitch as the signal strength gets stronger,, Now imagine a bare foot old gray haired man waving a food strainer at the window and listening to the beeps,, I got to laughing so hard I had to sit down.. I tell this story to the college kids and they come unglued with hysterical laughter..

Usually I get more but here a scan I just made..

Thanks Ollie..

Any ideas how I can rig a strong transmitting antenna that won't show up on condo neighbors radios and TV's ?   LOL

AND..  How can a rig up a Marshall stack to a headphone rig that will give me the dimensionality of tube distortion cranked, and fullness of sound/headroom of a cranked 50 watt stack  ?  Are there helmets out that allow fullness of tube tone without the loss of small ear-piece speakers ?

LMAO  LOL I dont know you are talking to one that can wrap coils of enameled wire around an oatmeal box use an old galena crystal for a detector and with old cans (headphones) listen to AM out of Denver.   The first reciever I built we actaully used chassis punches to put holes in a chsssis box for the tube sockets.. It was a 5 tube hetrodyne We drilled the holes to mount the the terminal strips and soldered all the compomnents as to prevent feedback and spurious emissions, It was one of the new designs that used AGC (auto gain control) in the if section..Then we had to adjust the coils in the input RF amp by sweeping with a RF generator from 550 kc to 1640 kc.. The local oscillator had to convert in a linear fashion to to an if gfrequency of 455 MB Then the if transformers wrre adjusted for max gian and stability. Once detected the audio was sent to the final audio output 5 to 10 watts hell I dont remember..

What do you want to do? LOL

EDIT The first radar I worked on in the navy had 3 if strips (tube) and had a 40 stage gain of 160 db)  My expertise is with RF and then video,,,Although I am familiar with audio freqs Lonman and others can provide better tech assistance with PA products and what to use..

One of my favorite Antennas of all time. Using a Pringle can.

Galena is lead ore..  That can conduct radiowaves without a crystal ?

Here's something I never understood.  When I was in elementary school I built a small (several dollar) Crystal radio.  Why would an AM crystal radio have picked up one station which was Radio Moscow ?
