wow one would have thought someone would have got to this by now. Latency is something I have had probs with in the past as well. Still do if I am using my mic via a mixer but it doesnt seem to happen if I plug into the soundcard itself. I have an m-audio fasttrack external with an xlr connector and preamp for mic. My biggest prob these days is that it only records on one track and it means I have to copy and paste to the right side to balance it.
As I dont use the software you are using I havent got any suggestions Billy sorry :(

OK shame us all why dont you. LOL

Dont know the card or the program.
I have just pulled the following off the web.

WATCH THOSE BUFFERS!
you may need to increase your buffer size to give the CPU a break. While lowering the buffer size will give you lower latency, during the mix phase, when you need plug-ins, the increased latency trade-off may be worth it.

And again off the web

ProblemVST instruments and effect plug-ins can only be monitored with very high latencies.

CauseThe audio signal can only be monitored delayed by the system’s latency and it is most likely that an audio card without ASIO 2.0 drivers and correspondingly high latencies is in use. It can also be that the wrong driver has been chosen.

SolutionThe latency of the audio card is displayed in the ASIO device setup (please consult the manual for details). Latencies higher than  6 ms are often disturbing and can only be reduced by using dedicated  ASIO 2.0 drivers. Please check whether the correct driver is chosen since both the ASIO-Multimedia driver and the ASIO DirectX driver are inappropriate for working with low latencies. If no additional driver is available, please add an audio card with ASIO 2.0 drivers to the setup.
