Ok, some of you may have realised it was coming. Most KJ,s have little or no experiance of midi. I exclude Morgan because she obviously used to perform before becoming a KJ. When my sister rehearses I use a mixture of CDG and Midi. While the CDG is excelent and has the advantage of backing vocals, the midi stands out as a better and more powerful sound. I dont use expensive stuff. I am currently using a yamaha keyboard that cost less than £200. I welcome musicians to come in on this one. BD for President... |

I Have used MIDI through a Roland Synthesizer. They sound Much better than computer synthesized. I have produced some tracks that wernt avalible on cdg, and they are well accepted. I only use them at private parties which is the exception to the ascap rule. |

I have played in bands for over 3 years, been a karaoke and wedding DJ for 2 1/2 years, and been a huge supporter of the local music scene wherever I lived since I was about 15 and I have NEVER in my life heard a MIDI track that didn't sound like absolute crap compared to real instruments (like used on quality CDGs). Sorry...a computer/synth just can't accurately recreate the nuances and expression of real guitars and drums |

Nutech used midi files for their early cdgs, before they took over Nikkodo and they sound like crap compared to Brands like Sound CHoice, Pop Hits Monthly and the like. I can't imagine midi sounding better than real instruments and backing vocals are a must or you're gonna get the complaint that it doesn't sound like the real thing. Trust me if karaoke singers can tell the difference then you can too. |

I posted this subject on other thread and I am repeating it here. I agree with Danny that most of the karaoke MIDI is crap. MIDI files conversion is similar to A/D and D/A conversion. If you use cheap A/D converter, no matter how great the original music was, the converted digital file will sound terrible. Same with MIDI. MIDI is no more than a sequence of code that instructs the sound producer to make certain note, for certain duration with certain instrument. That's it. It doesn't matter if Beethoven himself created the original MIDI file, if the music file producing the instrument sucks, the music sucks, period. Computer MIDI files sound terrible and some lower end MIDI machines are decent but they sound terrible compared to live music done by someone who knows how to play music. I have spent some time in studio when my friend's band cut their two CDs and although I am no musician I can tell you the difference between what sounds good and what doesn't. As I mentioned in other thread, some professional MIDI instruments do sound great but at a great cost. If I had about $10k to set up my studio, then I can probably make my MIDI file sound close to the live music but to me CD+G is much better and cheaper way to produce a great sound for karaoke. |

Eben My sound module, in storage at the moment is a Korg 05R/W. Many years old now. It sounds incredible. Suprisingly my recent Yamaha PSR-295 although differant, sounds just as good. Tremendous. Cant understand your attitude to it. I got a DX7 in the 80's when they first came out. On T.V. then, many chart bands were using it. Even in America. A lot of Hit records were produced using Cubase and the DX7, including its drum sounds. (not always) You have therefore just told me that a lot of the 80's chart music was crap. Maybe its just us in the UK. Maybe were all brain dead and buy any old crap. Saying midi is crap is a hell of a sweeping statement dont you think. My korg is a lot newer than the DX7 and sounds a lot better. |

MIDI IS just instructions that tells an electronic instrument what to do. MIDI in computers (which is what most people here are referring to) usually sounds like crap, due to the poor samples and cheesy wavetables used to reproduce the sound. The NuTech stuff sounds like the kind of crap you would expect to be done with the MIDI in your average soundblaster from that time frame--it is QUITE apparent that it was not produced using a good sound module. On the other hand, a GOOD MIDI device can sound really good, especially the ones that use samples of real instruments to produce the sounds. In some cases, this can sound as good as someone playing the real thing, except that you eliminate the imperfections caused by human error. There is even software to introduce these imperfections, to make the music sound more "real". I have heard some good shows done this way, but it has been quite a long time. |

Thankyou Meep. Why does Eben have such a downer on the 80's I loved it. It was a follow on from punk which I wasnt into, but the music... Blondie (not keyboard) ,Duran Duran, Elo, Elton John, Erasure, Eurythmics, Nick Kershaw, Pet Shop Boys, Spandau Ballet, Michael Jackson to name but a few. Sorry Eben I must simply be an old unappreciative dunce of a morron. I will meekly crawl off and die. I will always remember this date. 24/1/07 American Pie |
