Why don't more KJ's use a wireless earpiece monitor for the singers? Wouldn't this be a better, more direct way for singers to hear themselves and the music? It wouldn't be affected so much by room acoustics, speaker setups, crowd noise etc. Or are wireless earpiece systems still too expensive? |

I don't like the idea of singing after someone with an ear infection. LOL |

I hadn't thought of that Jian! Well, ordinarily there'd be less germ transfer involved compared to mics I would think. Maybe use some disposable protective covers? |

My understanding of IEM system is that they are molded for a particular person's ear. Or do they have one that fit all shape and sizes of ears? |

I make them put a galvanized bucket over their head. It works very well to amplify the sound for them. Besides, that would cost more money...... for an already inadequete system. :O  |

Used earplugs would have to be the NASTIEST UNSANITARY things to stick in your ear possible. Probly some health department regualtions governing it. |

I didn't think of the now obvious hygiene issue. Anyway, out of curiosity, is there a good but reasonably priced wireless earpiece system out there that anybody knows of? |

A decent in ear system will run around $600. |

$600! Wow! I guess I don't understand why the technology would still cost so much these days. Seems like you're just combing a small line-in FM transmitter system with a good earbud hearing piece. |

It's probably the quality of the transmitter/receiver - don't want a bunch of static directly in your ear - that would hurt. Also the ear piece would need to be of decent quality, if it isn't going to sound rich & full then why bother with an in-ear piece. |

Yeah that's all true! I guess my original interest in a wireless system was to just allow the singer to better hear the balance of vocal to music and to give the singer a clearer pitch reference no matter where he was standing in the room. |

They really weren't designed for studio use anyway, so I imagine they wouldn't have sounded that great. They are primarily designed to eliminate the need for a stage monitoring system in which the singers/players could hear themselves clearly & allow the outside sound in as well. So the ones you heard did as they were intended. In a studio setting, yes over ear (full size) headphones are the only way to go. |
