This may sound dumb, but what's the difference between regular speakers and studio speakers?

Studio speakers are usually eq'd & voiced for an ultimately flat response in the frequency curve when recording.  WHile recording the engineer doesn't want to hear a bunch of 'color' that regular speakers will/can add.
Regular home stereo speakers are generally tailered to reproduce higher bass & treble with dips in the midrange frequencies - typically.  Which is probably why the classic 'smile' face are so common (albeit a very wrong setting) on PA eq's.  It gives that sound that home stereos are designed for, although that setting does nothing for vocals as the midrange is where most of your vocal frequencies lie!

does that mean a higher end studio speaker can be used for vocal speakers?

A handful will say that they can, however studio speakers are gnerally 'near field' monitors meaning they can't handle alot of power - they are meant to be used at lower volumes within a couple feet from the listener.  Not really designed for PA use.
