Well I got a lessoned handed..or rather shoved to me on NYE. Got suckered into playing some harder music, which I will gladly do....then I was not paying much attention, looking for next song, talking with some people. When the crowd, well 2 people in the crowd started "moshing"...which still wouldn't bother me, as long as there not destroying stuff. If it gets crazy I'll kill it, announce sorry no more if you can't behave and move onto something else. Well this was different. One of the girls that was there was walking across the dance floor and this sob shoved her, hard, into my tv stand....knocked it off on the floor, it's toast..knocked both of my microphones over. At which point I immedately killed the music...announced over the mic that they were done and gonna get banned, which they did. We had it under control, the owner came over all freaking out about a possible fight....we kicked them out...played a few more songs...than packed it up......ahhhhhhhh, it was going so well too. So the owner is trying to get some $ from these people...Don't know if she will or not. All in all a good night, except for this incident. So my question is this...what would some of you do in this situation!?!?

before you kick them out, you get their names and driver's license info, call the cops, and tell them you're pressing charges for damages unless they make immediate arrangements for compensation!

Yes...I'm making a certain *mental note* of that statement for future incidents. Thanks for the tip ~ MrD

If it was downright intended to damage your equipment, you may be able to press charges - but whether you would actually get money out of them or not is probably a different story. Chances are it would cost you less to replace that couple hundred $$ worth of gear over pressing charges, paying legal fees taking them to court, MAYBE getting a judgement against them & then HOPE they pay you.
If it was an accident, not much could be done. Chalk it up to experience & keep an eye out.

This is part of the cost of doing business. Things get broken. Make sure you're adequately insured and accept that every now and again you're gonna have to put out a few bucks to replace broken stuff.

I agree with LON on this one. Accidents do happen. BUt then again, if it is intentional, that is a different story.
I have a section in my contracts that states the venue owner/person hiring me is responsible for all damage casued by attendees of the even. I have never had to use that part of the contract, but if it cost a great ammout to replace the broken equipment, I would try to come to some sort of agreement with the venue owner/person hiring mee to cover the costs. IF they refused, I would go to court if the $$$$ ammout warranted it.
Chalk it up to experince, and be more careful next time.

"Moshing" should bother you, because the not-too-uncommon result of such behavior is chaos, damage, and hurt. When you allow chaos you can expect chaos.

I agree with Lon...(one of the these days i'm sure we wil ahve a difference of opinion, but i don't know when that will be) try to get some form of compensation from them before they leave, but there's little else you can do if it wasn't intentional.
as for the moshing, i woudln't let that sort of thing go on anywhere near my equipment (and if it were my bar, i wouldn't allow it period). there is way too much risk of injury and lawsuit for the bar and as you found out, a definite possibility of damage to equipment.

Plus go with the demographic and venue you're playing at, even though a few people called for it, and there isn't enough room for a dancefloor much rather a mosh pit, it wouldn't be a great idea. I've done Drowning Pool's "Bodies" on karaoke, people head banged but when some people got up to rock harder, the KJ turned the volume down to settle the guys down. I understood when he did it.

I think it all depends on the people and the situation. I had a mic dropped by a regular, it was totally an accident. I never even told him he broke it. It was under warrantee and it was fixed for free. I also had a gal take a spill on my tvstand and monitor. She broke the wheel and bent things up. It was an accident also. I ate that one too.
Now if someone was being purposely abusive to the equipment and broke something, I would try to get compensation. Most of the time I can stop that before it becomes a problem though. Why people think they can swing a mic around by the cord is beyond me.

I tried to get a girl to give me her License number and she ran away. So I was out the door behind her with my cell phone. I gave the cops her number as she was clearing the parking lot. I got paid for my damages from her girlfriend to keep me from pressing charges. LMAO
It goes back to they type of music you play, determines the type of crowd (behavior).
Edited song books are great. :worship:
I practice crowd control. I want the crowd emotions going up and down all night. I don't want them crawling on the ceiling, but I don't want them falling asleep, either. Up and down all night. Now everyone....Repeat after me.... up and down all night......up and down all night..... up and down all night...... Get the picture????
Up all night, equals rowdy. Down all night, equals leaving. Up and down all night, equals what you want.... :worship: Like little kids... they need to be controlled. Since they can't be trusted you have to do it for them with the music selection you play. If they get too nuts, I sing a slow song.

I totally agree with what loman said here, that was my thought process on the whole thing. It's probably NOT worth it to pursue! I do like the idea of the threat though..pay up now or we're calling the cops and pressing charges! Accidents happen, which I can let slide, but this was no accident. This was definate intent. The loss wasn't huge, but I'm still not happy about it. I know it's about crowd control. As for big dog, I also agree...up & down....which is what I most certainly do. I do also though, "play it all". This will not stop me from playing 'bodies' or something like that. It does however, give me a refreshed idea on how to deal with this kind of thing. Thanks guys...MrD

When the first incident happened to me (the mic being dropped and broke). I wasn't sure how to handle it. I felt bad for the regular who did it. I knew it was an accident. He wasn't drunk or flinging it around. It just slipped out of his hands. I just didn't have the heart to tell him what he'd done. I knew he'd feel horrible. I'm just glad it didn't cost any money to fix.
It is great to have a conversations like this. We have had discussions about this before and it helped me to realize if someone maliciously breaks something there is nothing wrong with asking for compensation. I wouldn't take it to court, but I would make an attempt to stop them before they left.

Since the mike was already broken, you should have hit him in the head with it. You could have claimed temporary insanity...... :O
Up & down.....
