Express Karaoke has a sale on their 5 dollar or less section of disc. If you buy 10 or more they're just 99cents a piece. It seems quite a bit of it is SGB, Backstage, Nutech, Priddis and such. I was just wondering if anyone else had looked through these and found anything work purchasing. SGB, I'm familiar with but not the other stuff, though I'm sure that it's pretty hit and miss that any of them are that great, but just thought I'd ask here just in case.
Thanks,
James

I've used some of these:

SGB (as you probably know) are hit and miss.  They also have some titles that no one else has, especially for the 80's / 90's rock stuff.

Backstage - Some of the one's I've heard have background vocals in them for the entire song!     They're definately a gamble.

Nutech - These are pretty bad quality too.  I remember the "Baby Got Back" by Sir Mix-A-Lot on Nutech sounded nothing at all like the real version.  I actually like DK's version of that song the best (even better than SC).  With Nutech, you'll get what you pay for at $.99

Priddis  - Probably the worst of the group.  I bought a Priddis disc with hip hop tunes and it was garbage.  I'll never buy anything Priddis again.  They should pay you to take them off their hands.

Other people probably have differing opinions on these, but these are how I rate them based on personal experience.

They are definitely hit and miss -- mostly with the lyrics, which are
routinely bad. The instrumentals are often outstanding and they are the
preferred version for many of the songs I sing, even over SoundChoice.

I don't like Backstage and I avoid them if at all possible.

Nutech is just bad. I am probably going to remove all of those disks from my
library.

Now we get to where I disagree. I only have experience with their "Lost
Classics" series, but many of those are quite good. I can't speak to
other titles of theirs, but the LC disks are a must-have as far as I am
concerned.

I agree with you except on the Priddis, and I am going to go to the sale and
see if any are left. 8-)

Nutech is NOT just bad...

they DO have some horrid versions of songs out there. I've also gotten some songs from them that NOBODY else has, and some are pretty good. I've even got a few of the nutech songs I PREFER over other manus... Tom Petty's "Mary Jane's Last Dance (Night)" immediately comes to mind!

Also, I got Amy Grant's "I Will Remember You" hit from the mid eighties on Nutech... nobody else had it available and it frickin' ROCKS!!

Nutech is also responsible for the Karaoke Tools set, the SAVA and SAVP series...

Don't IMMEDIATELY discount therm.

All those manus do have their own 'diamonds in the rough' so to speak.  Out of all of them, Priddis is probably the best.  Backstage aka BS, Eagles disc has a couple songs, Get Over It comes to mind that with a little channel eq'ing, actually rocks.  I Am I Said - Neil Diamond is actually prefered version for many over a couple other versions I have - including SC.
Nu-Tech has a couple worth while versions & songs that aren't out anywhere.  SOME of their stuff musically was directly ripped off from other manus music - they were fined heavily back in the early 90's but it wasn't that many songs.  I prefer a couple of the Pearl Jam tunes that they released, but many of their songs aren't worth the disc they are manu'd on.
SGB - I have never liked, I keep hearing people saying that they have some really good rock versions, I have yet to hear 1 that I like.  I have 3 of their discs listed - the non duplicated songs anyway which brings the actual song amount down to about 6 total between the 3 discs.  I have about 10 others that I literally tossed because nothing even resembled the original songs.

Another Opinion
Backstage Billie Joel consistently matches my Billie Joel tapes more closely than any other manfu
The SGB Jazz series is marvelous
SAVA  The rendition of City of New Orleans is superior to any other, as are a lot of their other country tracks.  And, in general, I like the tracks in the SAVP series.

And these are not the only tracks I prefer from each of the above!

As to Priddis.  I own about a dozen of them.  With all of the disks that I have bought of late, I have many discs I have never listened to.  I spent some time today listening to the Priddis disks.  They're not the best.  However, I paid about $3 a disc pay that, again, anytime for what I got. I can't see how you'd go wrong fo .99

I have many of the Priddis Pro & Performers series.    They are comparable to sound choice renditions.  I also have the lost classics and love them.  I actually like Priddis country tracks better than the sound choice.  The does a tremendous job with the slower genre like Josh Grobam and Andrea Bochelli.  Priddis broadway tune are excellent too.  I agree about staying away from the SGB.
Best Regards,
Bob

I will not ever judge the company.    I will judge the individual song rendition by how close it comes to what I heard on the radio.    It's the only way to judge anything.     No single company has ever gotten every song close.   They all screw up once in a while.     Some may be more consistant.    Listen to the radio version, then listen to the karaoke song, then tell me which one (company's version) is best.   I have been surprised a good many times by an off companies version of a song.    I will only list the song that comes as close as the original radio version, period.   To not list a version that is closer to the original, than a more popular companies version isn't right.     Just because it's a bigger company.    Give the singers what they are use to hearing and singing along with.
