This was brought up by someone . Just wanted to know. They actually wanted to know if there was someone to honestly evaluate there talent and offer some suggestions. Some one to listen to song submissions. |

Have them submit in singers showcase and BEG for TOTAL honesty. NO sugar-coating or white lies. Also, asking for A REAL critique by those qualified to Critique a vocalist CONSTRUCTIVELY. Those that know what the term means. Make certain they stipulate that they can and will graciously handle No holds barred honesty, (the critiquing party can't be overly concerned about PC stuff, and delicate ego's because sometimes ego must go for us to improve in an art form) and ALL comments that are meant for the sole purpose of HELPING THEM improve. Have them promise they will not become defensive, or answer back to critiques that they might not like. Often these are the most helpful (Assuming they are honest). Have them ask for Pro's and Con's. NOT RANK. RANK does not matter. They want people to take the time and listen, critically evaluate their work. and tell them WHAT NEEDS IMPROVEMENT. Otherwise, it's not helpful. There response will be "thank you for your input, I appreciate you taking the time to listen and try to help me", and nothing more. They in turn will NOT hold grudges, and retaliate by rank or feedback bombing others. It's really too bad there isn't a description such as this in the Critique category. It's not "FUN" to be critiqued. What others tell you often means changing something such as a habit you've become used to, Relearning and building takes work. It's a growth process that is tough for both parties alike. Those taking the time to attempt to help by being HONEST (something most fear in SS) risk feeling rejected despite their well meaning attempts; and it's meant to be a humbling experience for the singer. Those change resistent, or thinking they are "the best", and just want kuddos, those on a throne believing they are "9"'s and the best singers in the world. Why ask for a Critique ? Why not just say "Tell me how good I am or shutup" I've critiqued "classic rock and ballad" styles. Have worked with vocalists as a musician accompanist for many many years. While I can't sing myself, I have a fairly decent concept of what sounds acceptable in the styles I toured playing, and worked with (as a professional multiinstrumentalist). For intricate tweaking of certain areas. A Singing instructor such as Elisha would be more helpful. Either that or a vocal coach in real life. For Country styles, Classical styles, Gospel, Spiritual styles, I don't have the knowledge to Critique. Same with non-western styles. For standards there are MANY MANY qualified folks here ! |

Steven is qualified to critique. There are others here who are also qualified. But those who can will not do it unless asked. So, Dog if you want to submit your song to SS just ask Steven. This work better if the written critique is sent via PM. |

I am trained, as a Speech Pathologist, to "critque" the voice. And.... many of the clients that come for evaluation are vocalists, most of whom are developing hoarseness or vocal nodules because they are practicing poor vocal behaviors and don't realize it ......... HOWEVER, I am not a VOICE or singing "teacher" per se. I just help analyze and then provide remediation for those who are improperly using their voices. And.... I come here to share a "hobby" and have some fun ... So, unless very specially asked (and then I will only oblige in private messages), I don't offer critiques in the SS. |

BD, i am no longer a professional singer (that ship sailed when i didn't want to conform to what execs wanted), but i decline to give anything more than kudos and praise to the singers in SS. Reason? Karaoke is meant to be a fun way to spend time, cut up, or just be in the spotlight for a bit. Most people who sing karaoke are not looking to be discovered. nor are they practicing for their recording contract or anything of that ilk. everyone sings, whether it's just singing along with the radio because they like the song or they can actually carry a tune doesn't matter. i think that's why american idol grates on my nerves so bad. the folks at american idol truly think they can sing, when the majority of them are almost unlistenable. they hit notes flat or sharp, miss key changes, etc. most karaoke singers who aren't good know they aren't good, but it doesn't mean they can't have fun singing. i'll get down off mmy soap box now. |

I disagree. Some singers are singing karaoke in the hope of being discovered. WE had two different people that came to our karaoke that ended up with recording contracts. A promoter called me up some time later asking me if I had anymore. Some take it every seriously. I have had a few very good singers come to karaoke and they would walk in and look around. If the crowd wasn't big enough for them, they would turn around and walk out. They would not be preforming for such a small crowd. :O |

Besides what does a pro singer have to do with anything. Just because you are a pro singer doesn't necessarily qualify anyone to more of a critique than a lamen listener. I know what I like to hear in a singer - but that is my personal taste, doesn't make it right or wrong. Most people do not want to hear the truth about their singing, & the ones that do rarely get it anyway - at least not on the SS. People don't want to hurt anyones feelings, so they generally will give kudos of some sort - even if the performance is less than desireable. But again, it is only karaoke, majority of people do it as fun or as a hobby, the ones that are LOOKING to be discovered in karaoke are in for a sad reality, it does happen, but not often. Also anyone that walks out because a crowd is too small, are just ego hounds & i'd rather them not be at my show anyway, I like my crowd to enjoy themselves & others. One of the definitions of 'professional' is as: Following an occupation as a means of livelihood or for gain. I was by definition a 'professional' singer for years, I sang in a band. I sang/played music for for gain.[/i] |

I have 1 guy that's the same way, not good at all, he isn't terrible, picks decent songs, great stage presence (almost goofy at points) & gets literally po'd if people don't respond to his song the way he thinks they should. Then he see's someone absolutely NAIL a song & gets great applause & wonders why no one gives him the same. It's not that they don't applaud - it's kind of that, applaud if they're good or applaud because it's over type of thing. |

when I was a KJ I had this guy come in every sat nite and would always select Mac the Knife. He was like your guy Lonman. He would also sing in the hopes of picking someone up. His singing was average at best. Eventually I would see him walk thru the door and immediately sing Mac the Knife simply becos I couldnt be bothered with his pouting if he didnt get the response he was looking for. So then of course he pouted becos I had sung his song. But the owner hated his voice so his complaints fell on deaf ears |
