I have a question..not having ever done this before..and not wanting to screw up, I was wanting to back up my external hard drive with another. When I burned my cdgs I put them in main folders(like soundchoice) then to sub folders(like 5000 series)..Just trying to figure out the safest and easiest step by step way of doing this. |

I have my external backed up on another external and all I do is copy the contents of one to the other. And when I update the contents of the "main", I just copy the whole thing again instead of trying to cherry pick and copy the changes. It just happens too fast to worry about it. |

Ditto just copy & paste the whole drive simple. |

Karyoker - Is there a reason you use the Folder Clone as opposed to the copy function in windows ? After reading the information it appears that the only advantage is that it has an automatic back up that you can setup to do backups at regular intervals. I'm always looking for a faster way to backup my library...right now it takes almost an hour to backup. Just curious |

There are two better solutions than the copy/paste function. 1. Microsoft SyncToy - it's free. It's not as fast as the 2nd solution below but it will only copy changes. No changes means it will scan the drive(s) and then stop. 2. AllWay SyncApp - This program rocks. It's quite fast and will synchronize a wide variety of folders/drives. It's free for personal use but if you go over a certain limit it will require you to purchase the professional version - about $20-$30 IIRC. Both of these perform a file SYNCHRONIZATION. That means that if you delete a bad file from your gig drive it can be set up to delete the same file from your backup. This means that you don't end up with the bad file copied back to your gig drive. Copying only the files that have changed means less usage of your backup drive - which may mean a much longer life for the drive. |
