I heard tonight on the news that a few restaurants are fighting a new no smoking law and one of the major tobacco companies is paying for their lawyers. Woooo this could turn in to a national fight at the Supreme Court.

California has been non-smoking for years, they set the guidelines pretty much. Went through the same lawsuits in the beginning.

here in Florida, they did it 1/2 way like everything else....
If the bar sells more than 20% of it's business in food, then it's non-smoking. Otherwise they allow smoking- which led to a lot of great sportsbars giving up their kitchens. Some bars are waiting to be challenged in court and see who determines what 20% really means. Other bars raised drink prices and serve food free. There are hundreds of ways around it....
And if all else fails, we have the Indian reservations/casinos that make their own rules, so they have restaurants, bars, casinos, etc that are all smoking.
Welcome to Floriduh!

I talked to a bar owner and she was talking about all of her competition. Her thinking is that they all do such a small food business and she thinks it would be better for them just to stop selling food and be smoking bars.
I still think giving up any of your revenue could be a disaster for some that are barely making it now. But loosing the smokers could have the same effect. It's a real Catch 22 situation for them.
Personally I want them to be non smoking. At least the ones I work at.

The bars are all whining for nothing. They may get hit for a while & have to survive, but eventually everything will level back as the playing field will be the same across the board eventually.
I work in a tribal bar as well, only smoking bar in town - well except for the casinos - & we actually have people leave & not come in BECAUSE of the smoking.

the only people disadvantaged are the smokers. we have to stand outside in the cold. Its not decreasing the smoking related illnesses that are costing the health system in nz millions it is exacerbating the problem. More health related issues due to going from a heated area in winter to near freezing and standing round.
I am all for giving folks choices but that should include a smoking room not being tossed outside in the cold.
I hate anti smoking lobbiests and all form of zealots

Yes, to a point ..... the BIGGEST effect that it has had isn't so much that there is no smoking allowed ...... but that the smokers don't sit for long periods of time and drink like they used to. They are up and down, inside and outside The clubs we play in haven't notice as big a decline in the number of people walking in (the door) .... but they have noticed a decline in the "amount" of drinks they are selling.... 'cause most won't walk away from an open drink nowadays.
Depending on how ya look at it ... that could be a good thing.
Oh well..... no smoking is here to stay ... at least for 50 yrs. or so. Such is the circle of life.

There is a lot of conjecture, and a lot of bits and peices of the facts.
Has there actually been a REAL scientific study of the ecnomic impact of smoking bans of business? Not some pseudo-science study by the anti-smoking lobby or taboco companies, but a real non-pardison (sp?) that is factual, and covers all the facts, not just 1/2 the facts.
For me, LEAVE PRIVATE BUSINES ALONE.
When is the Big Mac going to get banned?
What about tanning beds?
What about a thousand other things that are BAD for us, but feel OH SO GOOD!
Follow the money!!!!!!!!
Keep the government out of private business!!!!
What kills me, is most local/state governments LOVE the tax money revenue from the sales of tabaco products. THen on the other hand they want cig smoking banned.

Just as the insurance companies put an end to common law marriage they will end smoking in public as well.

I have been in a couple of public parks that you cannot smoke in. Not suppose to smoke at carnivals & fairs anymore either.
