First of all Merry Christmas !

I posted in the discussion room how the owner was nice enough to make special mounts for my speakers, so I didn't have to mess with speaker stands anymore.
Well I went in last night and he had mounted my monitor too. At first I was a little set back because he never asked me if he could do it and a monitor is supposed to be on the floor pointing upwards towards the singer. I took it down and explained I did not like it. He asked me just to try it. I'm curious to see what you guys think about this because I actually think it does work better after trying it. It didn't cause any feedback problems and the singers seem to be able to hear it better. It faces the singers and is close enough. It is mounted upright, no angle.

Does a monitor really have to be on the floor?

No, it can be mounted ANYWHERE as long at it provides sound back to the singer, and no feedback.
There are in-the-ear monitors
hot spot monitors that can be mounted on a mic stand
floor monitors

I did a gig once, had the audince speakrs about 15' in front of the singer, and then for a monitor just took one powered speaker on the floor by the audince speaker stands pointed strait back @ the singer.  Didn't tilt it or anything and worked great!

BTW, most of my regular gig I don't even use monitors.  I am able to place the main speakrs so that they point back at the singer.

If you like it there and it works for the singer with minimal feedback then keep it there :yes:

My setups never have a monitor for the singer either. I face the speakers so they point back at the singer and the KJ booth. That way they can hear themselves clearly and I can hear the mix as well.

I read about the improvements the bar owner is making for your setup and I think he is finally getting the idea that he better start takin' care of his star player :worship:

I feel so much better now. I thought for sure I was doing something wrong by not having a traditional set up. It just goes to prove I will always have new things to learn.

I have had monitors, both the screen and vocal monitors, mounted on the floor, few feet off the floor and on ceiling. All of them works equally for me.

For my set up, my audio monitor on floor facing up, and the screen about 3 feet off the floor slightly angled up and it works great.

Hi Babs - It's been a while since I've been in there - will try to come by soon.  I've driven by late after some gigs, but the parking lot was always full - looks like your show is going well!  Would like to check out the new setup.  I'm sure the saved space and setup time is great!  I've found that monitors can be placed in many locations (behind, in front, aside).   If the mains are placed a bit behind, you may even be able to get by without one.  If I remember right, you were using a JBL Eon 15 for one, which is a pretty good size.  If you feel one is necessary, you might want to consider a smaller unit.  I remember seeing a setup that had a smaller studio monitor strapped to the KJ's TV stand, right below the tray, that really seemed to do the trick for that venue.  Marty

we have our two monitors on stands its actually easier once u are used to it to have foldback coming back at nearer head height rather than the floor. So long as its in front and the mics are not pointing at the speaker it should be fine

Perhaps I should substitute shower boy for bar owner  :dancin:  :shock:

I like using the JBL as a monitor. It is nice to have a back up on sight if I ever have any trouble with my mains. Plus it is light weight.

You know I love when you stop by. Friday nights are crazy busy. People have been parking  all the way over at the train station. Saturday is usually a medium to small crowd. Wednesdays have been wierd, sometimes busy, sometimes not.

I have a set of PV monitor/speakers. They have pole mounts and can handle 1000 watts...I use them for my mains sometimes, and the vocals come out super clear, and feedback is rare.....and you know I like to use lots of echo....lol....I believe most monitors, excluding studio, can be used either or, just make sure the specs are adequate for your intended use......disclaimer....I'm just a dummy, though, so take my information with a strong laxative, and get a second opinion from one of the resident experts..... :)

With My Bose L1 system the Cylindrical Radiator is behind the singer so there is no need for monitors. The singer hears excatly what the crowd hears. and the volume is the same everywhere in the room. It only takes 3 trips to the truck this is a pic before I got my Mackie CFX12
